Roof over head: Lightning hits Drognitz – three houses in flames!
A storm struck Drognitz, a small village in southern Thuringia, in the early morning of September 5, 2025, which had devastating consequences. Shortly after midnight, more precisely at 12:25 a.m., the fire department was alerted when lightning struck a barn and ignited a fire. This unfortunate event caused the town center to go up in flames and three houses and several barns to be destroyed in an instant. The worst affected are a total of 18 people between the ages of 2 and 96 who are now homeless and had to temporarily stay with relatives or neighbors or are staying in a holiday apartment.
The fire brigade was on site with a large-scale deployment of up to 150 helpers from the surrounding districts of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, Saale-Orla and Saale-Holzland. Unfortunately, two fellow firefighters were slightly injured - but not by the fire itself. Mayor Tom Zimmermann assumes that a lightning strike in a barn triggered the fire, although the police cannot yet draw any final conclusions in their investigation.
Bad damage and an uncertain future
The material damage is estimated to be around one million euros. The morning after the fire, the scene in Drognitz was a picture of destruction; the fire brigade was still busy putting out embers and clearing away the remains of the burnt-down barns. The condition of the affected houses is also being evaluated by the district's building inspectorate.
The community has already set up a donation account for those affected in order to provide help as quickly as possible. Emergency pastoral care is also available to support the traumatized residents. On that day, the mountain rescue service also announced that it was using an aerial surveillance drone to provide active support in fighting the fire.
A look at the cause of the fire
It remains to be seen how many of the 18 affected residents were actually at home at the time of the fire. Given the circumstances, it could take a while before it is finally clear what exactly happened and the cause of the fire. The investigators first had to enter the scene of the fire because the extinguishing work and the risk of collapse did not allow them to investigate further. On the day of the accident, thunderstorms also hit Thuringia, which contributed to the tense situation.
Overall, it shows how unexpected and merciless nature can strike. However, the willingness to help of the residents and the surrounding communities gives hope that those affected will soon find new perspectives. Help is called for – and the community is ready.
