Drug intoxicated at the wheel: driver overturns on B88!

On Tuesday night there was a serious traffic accident on federal highway 88 near Ohrdruf, in the Gotha district. As MDR reports, a 38-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle when he left the road in a curve. The car crashed violently into a guardrail and ended up on its roof. The wreckage of the car was spread over a radius of around 200 meters.

The injured driver was taken to hospital after the accident. As a result, the federal highway 88 between Ohrdruf and Crawinkel was completely closed early in the morning until further notice in order to enable the rescue service and to clear the scene of the accident, but this was already done around 5:24 a.m., as Stau.info reported.

Drugs and alcohol involved

A test of the driver revealed that drug and alcohol use played a role in this incident. These results show once again that alcohol and drugs pose a serious risk when driving. According to a report by Auto, Motor und Sport, there were 26,882 accidents under the influence of intoxicants last year, although it is of increasing concern that the number of accidents under the influence of drugs increased by 0.7%. Particularly shocking: one in sixteen accident deaths is linked to alcohol.

Driving under the influence of alcohol in particular is a risk that cannot be ignored. Statistics show that 70.4% of car drivers who were driving with a blood alcohol level above 1.1 caused accidents that resulted in personal injury. It is particularly alarming that most of these accidents occur night after night, often between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Traffic situation and outlook

Thanks to a quick response by rescue workers, the accident site was soon cleared. The closure was lifted at 5:24 a.m., which eased traffic on the busy federal highway 88. But even beyond this specific incident, road safety remains an important issue, especially with regard to the influence of alcohol and drugs on the road.

The following still applies to all road users: driving responsibly is an absolute must. There are many dangers in road traffic and everyone should do their part to prevent accidents. Having good skills – not just when driving but also when drinking – can save lives.
