Major fire at Gut Hillemann: Fire brigade saves Heiligenstadt!
On June 24th there was a serious fire on the Hillemann estate between Heiligenstadt and Günterode, which posed major challenges for the local fire departments in containing a potential major fire. The fire department was alerted at 12:40 p.m. because unclear smoke developments were reported. When they arrived, building materials stored outside were already burning and the flames had spread to a neighboring warehouse, a parked car and the adjacent embankment Göttingen Tageblatt reported.
To contain the spread of the fire, the emergency services used three jet pipes. The fire was under control after about an hour. To extinguish the fire, the hall roof had to be partially opened with a turntable ladder in order to check whether the fire had been extinguished. Fortunately, an employee of the energy supplier determined that the photovoltaic system on the roof posed no danger.
Water shortage requires support
There was no extinguishing water available at the scene, which is why further support was requested from fire departments in Günterode, Kalteneber and Uder. They brought water to the site by shuttle service. The fire was finally extinguished around 3:30 p.m.
Fortunately, no one from the local community was injured; Only two firefighters suffered circulatory problems and had to be treated on site. More than 50 emergency services were involved in the extinguishing work. The exact amount of damage is not yet known.
Fire statistics in a global context
Such operations are not only locally relevant, but also shed light on the global challenges in the field of fire protection. The latest CFS CTIF (World Fire Statistics Report No. 29) report provides a comprehensive analysis of fire statistics for 2022, covering data from 55 countries representing a fifth of the world's population. The statistics include information on fire operations, fire casualties and firefighter deaths, as detailed in the report CTIF can be read.
Such analyzes are valuable resources for understanding global firefighting trends. They not only help to increase the efficiency of operations, but can also be used to derive new strategies for preventing and fighting fires. A look at the international statistics shows that similar challenges exist in other regions of the world as here in Germany.
The operations, like the one at Gut Hillemann, show the decisive and quick response of the fire brigade, which often has to work under extreme conditions to protect lives and property.
