After 9 years, Wollershausen is celebrating the shooting festival again - a festival for everyone!
After a break of almost a decade, it was finally that time again: The Wollershausen shooting club celebrated its shooting festival on Saturday, and that cannot simply be swept under the table. The smallest shooting festival in the region attracted almost 90 of the approximately 450 residents and not without reason. Mayor Holger Bode (SPD) emphasized that the community, which has grown historically and has a predominantly Protestant character, likes to differentiate itself from the neighboring communities in Duderstadt and Rhumspringe. A festival like this creates cohesion and community. The tradition of shooting was kept alive with a lively parade and many festive activities, which is not least due to the extraordinary commitment of the locals. According to [Göttinger Tageblatt](https://www.goettinger-tageblatt.de/lokales/goettingen-lk/gieboldehausen/nach-9-jahren-pause-wollershausen- Feiert-wieder-schuetzenfest-das-kleinste-in-der-region-4DJEOCVDQ5GX3DUDC67JHCRJ5Y.html?outputType=valid_amp) the last shooting festival was already over nine years, and since then Reinhold Heine and Birgitt Riechel have held the royal dignity.
Wollershausen has to make do with a smaller shooting festival, but the importance of such festivals should not be underestimated. Shooting originally developed in the Middle Ages out of the need to defend cities themselves. The shooting societies, traditionally tied to the church, are still an important part of German culture today and are now lived by people of different ages and backgrounds, as UNESCO notes. The custom has adapted to social changes over the years. The king or queen is determined as part of the king bird shooting, and at the same time each shooting club also offers special competitions for children and young people.
Competitions and young talent
This year, for the first time, the young participants were able to demonstrate their skills in air rifle shooting for 12 to 14 year olds and in blowgun shooting for the 5 to 11 year old age group. These initiatives are not only important for the tradition, but also help to promote young shooting talent. The fact that the Wollershausen Schützengesellschaft has a long history became apparent as early as the early 12th century with the founding of the first rifle societies, which often offered social platforms for trade and political discussions, as the DHM highlights. Such commitment helps pass on the community's values across generations.
The new majesty, shooting king Nick Schäfer and shooting queen Petra Heine, were proclaimed in the evening and will probably rave about their responsibility and honor for a long time. Cup winner Klaus Höfig and the young people Tom Sinnermann and Hedda Trauter were also honored. In a very fair competition, Amelie Hartelt and Mattis Schakowske won first places in blowgun shooting. Such experiences strengthen the sense of community and the connection to tradition, which is not only kept alive in Wollershausen, but also actively lived.
A look into the future
The shooting society's board team announced that the next shooting festival would take place in four years. One thing is certain for the residents of Wollershausen: the anticipation of the next festival can already be felt. With events that celebrate customs, joy and togetherness, shooting remains an indispensable component of social life in this small community.
