Erfurt sounds the alarm: Petersberg is threatened with closure because of fans' trash!

The future of the Petersberg is currently being hotly debated in Erfurt. The popular viewing point could soon be closed to onlookers. The reason for this is the reckless chaos left behind after four major concerts in July. How MDR reported that after the events, tons of rubbish remained on the cathedral square, the lawn was trampled down and the cultural manager Christian Hass speaks of a real devastation of the Petersberg.

The city administration has reacted to the grievances and is planning new concepts. Having already installed toilets and garbage containers to promote proper waste disposal behavior, the use of these facilities remains inadequate. Despite the clearly visible banners pointing out the dumpsters, a lot of waste ends up next to them. Dirk Möcker from the garden and cemetery office informs that the green areas have been severely damaged by unbalanced waste disposal and therefore have to be removed by mowing.

Appeal to concert goers

Culture freaks like Andreas Gabalier and Roland Kaiser call on concertgoers to treat nature carefully and not to enter green spaces. “Bring your rubbish with you or throw it in the rubbish bin!” is the urgent appeal. Small garbage bags will be distributed on site to make waste disposal easier. Despite these measures, the condition of Petersberg is critical.

The cathedral square attracts over 50,000 spectators every year and has an excellent reputation in artistic and managerial circles. This year big names like Sido, Clueso and Roland Kaiser performed. Although the summer arena is a magnet for music lovers, the positive aspects are in stark contrast to the environmental problems caused by large events, such as Environment in the classroom holds on.

Due to their large number of participants, large events not only require a large consumption of resources, but also bring with them challenges: travel, accommodation, food and, above all, waste management represent major problems that need to be overcome. A sustainable organization could therefore be an important step towards solving environmental issues. Innovative mobility strategies are needed here that make travel easier and could offer an environmentally friendly alternative.

Sustainable solutions

Under the given circumstances, responsible handling of the environment plays a crucial role. For future events, sustainable planning could help reduce environmental impact. This could be done through the use of reusable systems, the provision of rental bikes and the promotion of tram tickets. The awareness that each individual contributes to improving the situation should be strengthened.

The city of Erfurt is faced with the challenge of balancing people's cultural enjoyment with the protection of nature. The ideas for upgrading and protecting the areas are urgently needed. By rethinking things together, it could be possible to make future events sustainable and to preserve the beauty of the Petersberg.
