Erfurt is becoming a traffic center: faster with new bridges!

Erfurt Central Station is about to undergo a significant renovation, which is intended to significantly shorten travel times between Erfurt and Nuremberg. Deutsche Bahn today presented plans that provide for the construction of two transfer bridges to the east near Azmannsdorf and to the west near Bischleben. The aim of these construction projects is to enable express trains to enter and exit more efficiently. In the future, trains on the Erfurt-Nuremberg route will only take 56 minutes instead of 67 minutes. This reports MDR.

The reason for the planned measures is the bottleneck in the existing rail network felt by most passengers. Local and long-distance traffic currently share the tracks before and after the main station. The new flyover structures will allow more trains to enter the main station at the same time, which will bring enormous advantages, especially for long-distance traffic. The two construction projects are part of the more comprehensive expansion strategy, which is also being pushed forward as part of the Deutschland-Takt.

Expansion with an eye on the future

A central component of the plans is the planned preliminary planning, which is scheduled to begin as early as 2026. A feasibility study has confirmed the necessary infrastructural adjustments to the Erfurt junction so that the increased requirements of future train traffic can be met. DB InfraGO will also provide information about progress in the planning phase. The total costs of the construction work amount to around 669 million euros. The selected bridge variants result in the least impact on the landscape and are economically sensible, as is the case German railway further reported.

The transfer bridges not only enable a faster connection between Erfurt and Nuremberg, but also promote half-hour long-distance connections in Erfurt with shorter stopping times. The planned increase in speed to up to 200 km/h will ensure that travelers reach their destination more quickly.

Part of the Germany clock

The measures at Erfurt Central Station should not be viewed in isolation, but rather as part of a larger plan for the rail network in Germany. These renovations involve numerous projects that are coordinated under the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030. Emphasis is placed on a common goal: shorter travel times and needs-based capacities in rail transport. The creation of consistent timing is an essential goal BMV turns out.

Overall, the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 provides for investments of over 42 billion euros to increase efficiency and reliability in passenger transport. This commitment will improve the travel experience for many users and shape the future of rail transport in Germany sustainably.
