Erfurt swimming pools: Hopes for a bright summer are sprouting!

The outdoor pool season in Erfurt is slowly picking up speed, even if the weather conditions so far promise more autumn than summer. Dirk Hesse, the head of the SWE pools, is nevertheless optimistic and hopes for many sunny days for bathers in the summer of 2025. The highlight of last week was reached with an impressive number of visitors of 15,000 guests on the sunny weekend (June 21st/22nd), which shows that the interest in outdoor pools is unbroken. On Saturday, 4,000 guests came to the outdoor pool, while on Sunday a whopping 11,000 visitors populated the pools - a season record! erfurt.de reports an impressive distribution: 5,000 in the Nordbad, 4,300 in the Stotternheim lido and 1,000 in the Dreienbrunnenbad.

But despite these encouraging figures, there are also concerns. The start of summer was bumpy, the temperatures often left something to be desired, so many students were looking forward to visiting the outdoor pool, but were often disappointed by the cool weather. According to Stadtwerke Erfurt (SWE), citizens are increasingly visiting indoor swimming pools as a result of the fresh temperatures, while outdoor pools are hoping for better weather. Accordingly, the Johannesplatz swimming pool will be open from June 30th to August 10th, 2025, only from Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. However, it remains closed on weekends, which may displease many bathing-loving citizens.

Maintenance work on the swimming pools

While the outdoor pool season is just beginning, important maintenance work will take place in the coming weeks. The Roland Matthes swimming pool and the sauna area must close from June 30th to August 10th due to necessary repairs. Not only will the water treatment be improved and a new locking system for the lockers installed, but the ceiling beams will also be maintained 30 years after the last renovation. Once this work has been completed, not only will everything be freshly cleaned, but a herbal area for infusions will also be created in the sauna garden and a beautiful fire bowl corner will be created. The reopening after this work is planned for the start of school, which will certainly please many Erfurt residents.

Both the grade of the indoor swimming pools and the outdoor pools is important when looking at the number of visitors compared to previous years. A DGfdB survey on the pool landscape showed that an average of around 320 pools were involved in 2022. Despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and the energy crisis, visitor numbers remained remarkably stable, indicating that swimming pools remain popular. The numbers speak for themselves: in 2022, outdoor pools had an average of around 42,000 guests, combination pools had almost 187,000 guests and indoor pools with sports functions around 77,000. dgfdb.de emphasizes that there were point discounts here compared to previous times and that the costs per year have increased noticeably.

In conclusion, it can be said that Erfurt's outdoor pools and indoor swimming pools are looking forward to an exciting summer - despite the capricious weather. The commitment of SWE-Bäder GmbH, which ensures the well-being of over 520,000 bathers every year, shows that they care about the future of bathing pleasure in the city. The hope for many beautiful summer days remains and there is great anticipation for the maintenance work to reopen.
