Greifswalder FC again without a win: Drama in Erfurt ends bitterly!

On August 10, 2025, Greifswalder FC will open another chapter in the still young season of the Regionalliga Northeast. With an exciting but ultimately unfortunate 2:3 against FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt, the Greifswald team had to leave the pitch again without a win in this encounter. It was the seventh meeting between the two teams, and Greifswald is still without a point after this game against Erfurt.

Already in the fourth minute the game became critical for the Greifswald team: Obed Ugondu gave the hosts the lead. This early moment of shock initially made the GFC defense appear helpless, and so Ben-Luca Moritz made it 2-0 in the 37th minute, whose long-range shot was prepared by Marco Wolf. Until half time, the GFC was unable to assert itself against the compact Erfurt ranks and turn the game around. We went into the dressing room with a score of 0:2.

Thrilling second half

After the break, Erfurt proved its strength. A handball by Edgar Kaizer resulted in a penalty, which Maxime Awoudja converted to give the team a comfortable 3-0 lead. With his first shot on goal, Osman Atilgan scored the next goal for Greifswald in the 53rd minute. Hope arose, but things took a chaotic turn.

First, Phillip Aboagye (Erfurt) was shown red for a foul on Joe-Joe Richardson, and Marco Wolf also had to leave the pitch early after a yellow-red card. The GFC was in the majority, but the longed-for turnaround did not materialize. Lucas Vierling, the captain of the Greifswald team, also received a yellow-red card, which further escalated the situation. Finally, Osman Atilgan scored again to make it 3-2, but the goal of equalizing seemed unattainable. Erfurt's goalkeeping coach Patrick Ecke also saw red for his complaining in the hectic final phase, which reduced Erfurt to just nine field players.

A game full of emotions

A total of 6,462 spectators watched the thrilling duel in the Thuringian state capital. The atmosphere was tense, the players gave their all. Despite the overwhelming majority in the second half, Greifswald was unable to equalize. In the final minute, Erfurt's Sofiane Ikene almost caused a thrill with an own goal, but the final whistle was blown after a violent 11-minute stoppage time.

After this defeat, Greifswalder FC is in 11th place in the Regionalliga Northeast after the third matchday. While FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt remains unbeaten and now has nine points after three games, Greifswald will have to work on its performance.
