Major operation in Erfurt: ICE stops because of the smell of fire - 80 travelers evacuated!
An extraordinary incident occurred today, July 10, 2025, when an ICE had to make an emergency stop in front of Erfurt. The train on the route from Eisenach to Erfurt stopped due to a burning smell perceived by travelers in one of the carriages. In a moment of horror, the Deutsche Bahn ICE 800 reported smoke development around 1:15 p.m., whereupon the Erfurt professional fire department and two volunteer fire departments were immediately alerted. MDR reports that the train made an unscheduled stop at Erfurt-Bischleben station, where around 600 passengers were staying.
Around 80 passengers were evacuated from the affected carriage and brought to safety. Firefighters, supported by the federal police and railway employees, were quickly on the scene to check the situation. During the operation it became clear that the smell of burning was not caused by a fire, but by a bogie that had overheated. The fire brigade could not find any fire on site, which was a relief for everyone. After around an hour, the ICE was allowed to continue its journey to Erfurt main station Day24 reported.
Major fire department operation
The large-scale operation was necessary because the supposed danger was taken seriously. This is the third operation of this kind in Erfurt-Bischleben this year. The affected railway line was closed during the operation to ensure rapid and safe action by the emergency services. Fortunately, there were no injuries among the travelers, which made the situation seem relatively mild.
Important prevention
Similar incidents show how important it is to react quickly to smoke on trains. In another incident on the route between Stuttgart and Dresden, travelers also had to be evacuated after a technical defect in the power car caused an alarming smoke signal ka-news reported. Fortunately, all passengers there were uninjured. Such incidents make it clear how valuable rapid action by the fire brigade and train crew is for the safety of passengers.
Today's event shows that even in the world of high-speed trains, a small disturbance can lead to a major emergency at any time. It's good that everyone on the train is fine and the security forces reacted quickly!
