Thuringian companies in the arms boom: seize contract opportunities!
A remarkable meeting of around 300 company representatives recently took place in Erfurt, which dealt with an urgent topic: the development of new fields of work in the defense industry for Thuringian suppliers. Organized by the Thuringian State Development Corporation (LEG) and three chambers of industry and commerce, the event aimed to establish contacts between industry and the defense sector. MDR reports that the automotive crisis poses major challenges for many companies in this region, so that 75% of the companies surveyed in the industry association are thinking about entering the defense industry.
In his speech, Prime Minister Mario Voigt emphasized the importance of Germany's defense capability and competitiveness. With regard to Thuringia's logistical advantages - centrally located and with a strong industrial base - new perspectives arise for companies. Experts such as Professor Michael Eßig from the Bundeswehr University in Munich found that only half of the companies present are currently active in the security and defense sector, which underlines the market opportunities.
The turning point for automotive suppliers
Markus Behrens, the chairman of the Thuringia State Employment Agency, sees no way out of the dilemma for many automotive suppliers without new business areas. Loud Day24 Companies have to rethink their perspectives, because the revival of the old automobile industry seems extremely unlikely. In addition, the change to electromobility is viewed as irreversible. This has already led to economic difficulties for many suppliers in Thuringia, which is why the arms industry certainly appears to be a ray of hope.
The federal government plans to invest several billion euros in the defense industry in the coming years. This could mean a secure order situation for Thuringian companies. The need to consider the defense sector as a potential business area is emphasized by many quarters, including the employment agency, which encourages companies to consider switching to the defense industry. Mirror highlights that many automotive suppliers already have the necessary know-how to be successful in the defense industry.
Secure order situations and challenges
The Bundeswehr currently only receives an average of two offers per procurement process, which intensifies the competitive situation. Rheinmetall's purchasing manager, Marcus Gerlach, also warns about dependencies on raw materials from countries such as China and Russia, which brings the need for resilient supply chains to the fore.
Carsten Bothmann from Binz Automotive GmbH points out that the defense industry cannot replace the automotive industry, but it will become increasingly important. The discussion about faster delivery times and research and development processes is also important, especially in view of the worsening security situation worldwide.
The outlook is clear: Thuringia may be at the beginning of a realignment of its industrial structure. With the tailwind of subsidized orders and a changed market situation, the defense industry could become the key to economic stability for many Thuringian companies.
