Cologne Zoo closes tropical house: large renovation after fire!

The Cologne Zoo has announced that the tropical house will be closed until mid -2026. This measure is a result of comprehensive renovation work that was necessary after a devastating fire in March 2022, in which over 130 animals lost their lives. The zoo plans to fundamentally modernize the tropical house opened in 2000 and bring it up to date energetically in order to improve the keeping conditions for the animals and create a more appealing experience for visitors.

As part of this modernization, the internal enclosures are to be revised and enlarged to offer the animals more space. These changes should not only promote the well -being of the animals, but also ensure better visibility for the guests. After the work has been completed, the zoo is planning to present new animal species in the tropical house - including species that have not yet been seen in the Cologne Zoo. However, details are not yet known, such as t-online reported.

additional modernizations in the zoo

The zoo's giraffe system is currently also closed to visitors, as modernization work also takes place here. In order to keep visitors happy during the conversion phases, the zoo starts the special exhibition "Dinoworld", which will be distributed over the entire site by 2027. This exhibition includes 24 XXL figures that are set up in the zoo at 17 different places and should offer an attractive change during the renovation work.

The first stage of the outer enclosure should be completed shortly before the summer vacation. These progress is part of the continuous efforts of the zoo not only to improve the security standards, but also to optimize the living conditions of the animals.

responsibility and research in animal welfare

in Zoos, such as the Cologne, committed zookeepers work who take care of the well -being of the animals every day. Scientists continuously research improvements in the keeping conditions in order to enable animals to live in a species -appropriate manner. This is done in accordance with strict official permits that are required for each enclosure to ensure that the well -being of the animals is always the focus. The information that is published on the VDZ-Zoos underline the passion and responsibility associated with animal husbandry in zoos.
