Gera is investing in the future: six used trams for local transport!

A lot is happening in Gera in terms of local transport. The city recently got a real bargain - six used trams were purchased by a transport company from Darmstadt for the symbolic price of one euro. This is not only a smart financial move, but also a response to the increasing number of passengers following the introduction of the Deutschlandticket. In 2024, Gera is even expecting around 17.2 million passengers, which once again underlines the need for new trailers, as MDR reports.

But that's not all - in addition to the trailers purchased, Gera also rented a railcar from Darmstadt. Around 30 specialists work in the workshop to prepare the used trailers, where the vehicles have to be made fit for use in Gera. In some cases modifications and a new yellow paintwork will be necessary. Despite its age of around 30 years, the GVB expects it to be used for another 16 years, which justifies the investment in the conversion of around 100,000 euros per car.

New impetus for the Gera tram

It's not just the used trailers that make the hearts of Gera's local transport users beat faster. An order for six new trams was also signed with Stadler Deutschland GmbH in December 2023. These new Tina type vehicles, which are scheduled to be delivered in 2026, are an answer to the requirements of modern, barrier-free local transport. What is particularly noteworthy is that these trams offer space for 270 passengers, 101 of which are seats, including five multifunctional areas for wheelchairs, strollers and bicycles, as Studio Gera reports.

The order value for these new vehicles is around 38 million euros, with financing coming from support from the Free State of Thuringia in the amount of 17.07 million euros and from the city of Gera with 7.2 million euros. Here too, the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) will contribute to financing. Another step in the right direction for improving local public transport in Gera to increase passenger comfort and reduce emissions.

Ecological, barrier-free and comfortable

The current trend in Gera shows a strong commitment to attractive and sustainable local public transport (ÖPNV). This is also important for the entire region. The federal government supports states and municipalities in ensuring a high-quality public transport service - over 11 billion euros are made available annually for local rail passenger transport. The quality of public transport is not only essential for citizens who rely on public transport; it also plays a crucial role in achieving the federal government's climate goals, as explained in detail on BMV.

The new and optimized trams in Gera not only increase the quality of life of citizens, but also promote social participation, especially for older people and people with disabilities. Gera shows here how with a good hand and the right concept you can make local transport future-oriented.
