After a fatal accident: Gera introduces a 30 km/h zone for more safety
In Gera, on Johannes-R.-Becher-Straße, new signs for a 30 km/h zone were put up on Monday. This measure follows a tragic incident that claimed the life of an eight-year-old child two weeks ago. The boy was hit by a car driven by a 69-year-old on his way to school. Mayor Thomas Lenk (CDU) announced that the introduction of the speed limit was a response to an online petition and the urgent demands of parents. Before the accident, the road was not considered an accident hotspot, which is why no 30 km/h zone had been set up until then, as mdr.de reports.
The exact cause of the accident is currently unclear and the police are continuing to investigate. As part of these investigations, further measures will also be considered to increase the safety of pedestrians. These include, among other things, the possible establishment of traffic islands and zebra crossings. A traffic count for pedestrians is also planned next year in order to collect data on movements and numbers in order to improve the traffic structure.
Raise student awareness
Another step in the follow-up to the incident is that the police will regularly raise awareness of road traffic among the students at the deceased boy's school. The goal is to raise awareness of the dangers of road traffic and prevent future accidents.
The measures implemented after the accident appear to be important to ensure the safety of children on their way to school. Even though the accident itself was unforeseeable, the new traffic regulations could prevent similar tragedies in the future.
