New animal attraction in Gera: Azara agoutis and golden-headed lion tamarins!
The zoo friends in Gera can be happy! The Thuringian Zoo has brought a breath of fresh air into its animal world with two Azara agoutis and two golden-headed lion tamarins. These new residents have already moved into the former vervet monkey facility, which has been extensively renovated and converted in recent months. That deserves a big round of applause Gera Zoo Support Association, which has worked actively on the renovation of the facility since it was founded in 2024.
The deputy zoo manager Steffen Horn emphasized the importance of volunteer help, without which this project would not have been possible. The prerequisite for a successful conversion was the merging of two enclosures and the installation of large glass panes and a roof. This means that the new animal species are now well protected from the effects of the weather.
Renovation and conversion of the facility
In the last few months, not only have the enclosures been collapsed, but the interior has also been thoroughly redesigned. The indoor ceiling was raised, an artificial rock with a new watercourse was integrated and the outdoor enclosures were redesigned. This commitment is reflected in the high quality of life that now exists for both the animals and the visitors.
The Azara agoutis, which have been living in Gera since May, come from various zoos in Germany; the male comes from the Ströhen Zoo and the female from the “Zoo der Minis” in Aue. The golden-headed lion tamarins, which came to Gera from the Wassenberg zoological station just a few days ago, were also purchased by the support association and are now proudly standing in their new home.
Importance of nature conservation
What makes these newcomers so special? You are part of important nature conservation projects! How modern zoos show, they play a crucial role in the breeding and care of endangered animal species. Participation in the European Conservation Breeding Programs (EEPs) ensures the long-term genetic diversity of these species. There are now EEP programs for over 400 animal species in Europe.
With its new residents, Gera could present itself not only as a place for entertainment, but also as an important element in nature conservation. It will be exciting to see how these animals will develop in their new environment. Zoo fans have every reason to stop by regularly and immerse themselves in zoo life!
