Gera city ring: full closure leads to long waiting times!

There's a lot going on in Gera at the moment - drivers have had to prepare for detours and traffic jams since Monday, October 6, 2025. To renew the south-east ring road, the city has completely closed the streets in both directions. For many, this means extended travel time and possibly nerves of steel, as traffic is routed through several diversion routes, like the gentlemen and ladies of MDR report.

The full closure is scheduled to last until October 18, 2025 and will primarily affect drivers who use the city ring road for their daily journeys. The recommended diversions include the streets Elsterdamm, Am Sommerbad, Gebrüder-Häußler-Straße, Theaterstraße and Straße des Bergmann. From the direction of Greiz, drivers can at least stay on the city ring road until the Braustraße intersection before the diversion takes effect.

Construction work and costs

But why all the fuss? The city ring is being renovated over a total length of around 634,000 euros. A third of these costs are financed from annual toll revenue. In addition to renewing the road, work is also being carried out on the connecting road to the Collis district. Residents in this area also have to be prepared for restrictions, as the work requires a complete closure there too. From the city ring, Collis can only be reached via Thränitz.

With all of these activities, one must not forget that road construction is a hot topic in Germany. Many roads are in need of repairs, and according to a 2025 survey, more than half of citizens are dissatisfied with the condition of the roads. Potholes and cracks in the asphalt are often the most common complaints. Many people also appreciate the government, which has decided on a restructuring package worth around 500 billion euros Statista is to be read.

The work in Gera is part of a larger trend. Road construction is the most important sector in civil engineering, and in 2024 the turnover in this area was over 14 billion euros. Despite the challenges of maintenance and rising costs, we have 80,000 employees who do their best to keep our roads in good condition and therefore keep our daily traffic moving.

So it's time to be patient and maybe consider public transport - as long as the city ring road isn't fully accessible again, there's no other choice! Let's keep our fingers crossed that the construction work progresses quickly.
