Star pianist Alexander Krichel delights Gera with Brahms and Tchaikovsky!

A musical highlight is just around the corner that will make the hearts of classical music lovers beat faster. This will happen on October 8th and 9th, 2025 Philharmonic Orchestra Altenburg Gera perform its second philharmonic concert of the season. Under the direction of Ruben Gazarian, the audience can expect a rousing program with Johannes Brahms’ Second Piano Concerto and Peter Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony.

The celebrated pianist Alexander Krichel, known from London, Tokyo and Gera, will appear as a soloist. The Hamburg native was described by NDR Kultur as “one of the most sophisticated pianists of the moment”. Krichel returns to Gera after making a lasting impression there with Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto.

Brahms’ masterpiece in focus

The Second Piano Concerto in B major op. 83 by Johannes Brahms, which premiered in 1881, shows Brahms's brilliant feel for the interaction between piano and orchestra. It is a work that lasts 50 minutes and is structured in four movements. The first movement, characterized by lyrical and dance themes, is a masterpiece of symbiosis between solo piano and the orchestra.

A particularly exciting part of this concerto will be the second movement, which functions as a scherzo, followed by a moving slow movement supported by a solo cello. The crowning conclusion is a cheerful rondo finale that is reminiscent of Hungarian folk music. Brahms himself derisively described the work as “a few little piano pieces,” which can hardly underline the value of this magnificent composition.

Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony

The program is complemented by Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony in F minor, a work that emerged from a deep crisis in the composer's life. It is considered a milestone in Russian music history and is dedicated to Nadezhda von Meck. The symphony ends with a triumphant finale that will thrill the audience.

The two concerts will take place in the Gera concert hall, each at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office, by telephone on 0365 8279105 (Gera) and 03447 585160 (Altenburg) and online at www.theater-altenburg-gera.de be acquired.
