Festival concert in Gotha: A musical symbol of unity celebrates 35 years!
On October 1, 2025, a particularly festive concert for German Unity Day was celebrated in Gotha. Under the motto “You have to cross seven bridges,” numerous music enthusiasts from Thuringia and all over Germany gathered to honor the 35 years of reunification together. The Thuringian Civil Service Association, represented by state chairman Frank Schönborn and his deputies Nicole Siebert and Tim Reukauf, played an important role in organizing the event.
Thuringia's Prime Minister Prof. Dr. Mario Voigt opened the event with a speech in which he spoke about the meaning of reunification. A very special highlight of the ceremony was the speech by the Hungarian ambassador, Dr. Györkös, who, as a contemporary witness, provided impressive insights into the opening of the Iron Curtain and honored the courage of the people in 1989.
A musical experience
The legendary band Karat performed and treated the audience to their greatest hits, including the one that gave the concert its name. A duet with the well-known singer Peter Maffay was particularly moving and moved many guests to tears. These cultural highlights made the festival a symbol of pride, cohesion and gratitude and showed the living bridges between East and West.
The guests found the concert to be an outstanding highlight of the celebrations, which impressively embodied the united spirit of Germany. The atmosphere that combined the musical performance with the historical context of reunification was particularly successful.
Celebrate in Ummerstadt
The program covers a wide range of music, culture, regional products and culinary specialties. District Administrator Wilhelm Schneider points out the importance of this joint celebration, which takes place every five years. Free shuttle buses and park & ride areas are available to make it easy for visitors to travel.
On the first day of the festival, visitors can expect a celebratory service at 10 a.m., followed by musical performances, including from a jazz band and the “Cocktail a cappella” choir. A party band is expected for the evening, which will ensure the atmosphere. On the second day, revelers can enjoy their time at the “Borderless Market,” where over 70 exhibitors offer their wares.
Diverse celebrations in Eichsfeld
Parallel to the celebrations in Gotha and Ummerstadt, there are equally exciting events in Eichsfeld. On October 3rd, the Borderland Museum in Teistungen opens its doors from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Here, visitors can expect hourly public tours through the exhibition about the Grenzlandweg, which are specially prepared for children.
In addition, there will be a special exhibition entitled “The Road to German Unity”, which will illuminate the historical context from the mass demonstrations in 1989 to reunification. In addition, student projects that won awards in the Federal President's history competition will be presented. Another highlight is the rock evening “Rock into Unity” in the Obereichsfeldhalle, which starts at 6 p.m.
The above-mentioned events make it clear that German Unity Day in Thuringia is celebrated with various activities that honor the memory of an eventful history and at the same time promote joy and cohesion.
