Gotha celebrates 1250 years of history with an exclusive film screening!
The city of Gotha is celebrating a very special anniversary this year: 1250 years of history and change. To mark this historic event, the Gotha city administration has launched several events in collaboration with the Gotha Cultural Foundation and the Friedenstein Foundation Gotha. A highlight is the special screening of the documentary "Gotha: 1250 years of history. 1250 years of change.", which will be shown on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Cineplex Gotha. As gotha-aktuell.info reports, the entry price for this special performance is only 4 euros per person.
The documentary is funded by the Gotha Cultural Foundation and realized by Leipziger Farbfilmer Filmproduktion. The film provides insights into formative events and developments in the city's history and illuminates the lives of important personalities. Among others, experts such as city historian Dr. Alexander Krünes has his say, which offers viewers deeper insights into the historical development of the city through interviews. Viewers can look forward to impressive archive footage that shows Gotha in a different light.
An exciting double program
But that's not all: The DEFA production “From Friedenstein to Schellenbrunnen” (1985) will be shown before the documentary. This film gem conveys an impressive picture of Gotha shortly before the political change and invites you to draw comparisons to today's urban development. The historical provenance of this film makes for an exciting introduction to the subsequent anniversary documentation.
Entrance fees for culture
A special aspect of the event is that half of the entrance fees go to the Gotha Cultural Foundation to support future cultural projects in the city. This initiative shows the commitment to the cultural development of the city and is an excellent example of civic engagement. Tickets for the special screening are now available at Cineplex Gotha.
The premiere of the documentary film series took place on October 16, 2025 at 7 p.m. in the Cineplex Gotha, where Mayor Knut Kreuch accompanied the event. Admission to the premiere was even free, and tickets were available at both the Gotha Tourist Information Center and the Cineplex. Given the limited capacity of the performances, it is recommended that tickets be picked up early to secure a place for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
