Gotha celebrates: 50 stories for the city's 1250th anniversary in the library!

Cologne will soon be looking forward to a very special event, as the Gotha City Library will be organizing an impressive reading series as part of the city's 1250th anniversary. Under the motto “12 authors and 50 stories,” literature enthusiasts can look forward to exciting insights into Gotha’s past and future. The events begin with the 2023 Kurd Laßwitz scholarship holder, Thomas A. Herrig, who will offer first impressions on February 28, 2025 with his lecture “1250 Years of Gotha – a Personal View,” as reported gotha.de.

Monthly readings will take place in the Cibulka Hall, at which six former city clerks will also have their say. Birgit Ebbert and Reinhard Griebner will give exciting reviews of their scholarship stays, while Miku Sophie Kümel will read from her new novel. The program also includes appearances by Dr. Werner Schunk, who will report from his memoirs, and Mirko Krüger, who will tell the audience about his research into the 1979 art theft in “Tatort Gotha”.

Special highlights of the reading series

Mayor Knut Kreuch will present a satirical view of the city with his lecture “5 times Gotha in 12 minutes and 50 seconds”. Ronny Lehmann, an employee of the city library and an expert on Kurd Laßwitz's work, is also brought into focus. His lecture “Shot into Space – Technical Fictions from Gotha” will take place on September 26, 2025. Lehmann will underline the writer's importance for utopian literature in Germany. As with all events, entry is free and tickets are available from the city library six weeks before the respective reading oscar-am-freitag.de.

Although Gotha is looking forward to its literary anniversary celebrations, attention to other current events does not go unnoticed. The situation surrounding the semiconductor manufacturer Nexperia has worsened because it has temporarily stopped delivering wafers to its assembly factory in China. This follows the Dutch state separation process, which has raised some national security concerns, reports btimesonline.com. Such global developments also have local effects, especially in a city like Gotha, where technology and innovation are highly valued.
