Greens demand Maier's resignation: local politicians in danger!
Recently the situation has become alarming for local politicians in Thuringia. The district association of the Greens in Gotha has written an open letter to Interior Minister Georg Maier (SPD) and is demanding more effective protection for local elected officials or, in return, his resignation. How MDR reported, the letter denounces a systemic failure to protect volunteers. More and more people are choosing to withdraw from local politics - for fear of attacks and threats, which all too often characterize the everyday lives of these politicians.
The Greens point to a particularly threatening situation. A former city council member describes that he was recently insulted and physically attacked in downtown Gotha. The Green Office in the city was also the target of attacks on several occasions, with a threatening message being scratched into the windows and hate messages being stuck to the windows. In these cases, the perpetrators remained unknown, and the Greens criticize the fact that reports often simply come to nothing and investigations are stopped. The reality is that Home Office recommendations, such as avoiding dark places, are seen as unrealistic and ineffective.
A country in turmoil
The incidents are not just limited to Gotha. Violence against local politicians has also increased in other parts of Thuringia. In the Gotha district, the house of an SPD politician was set on fire, while in Suhl the windows of a party office were smashed. Interior Minister Georg Maier suspects political motives behind such crimes, which have now reached alarming proportions. A nationwide survey shows that 38% of the mayors and district administrators surveyed have experienced hostility in the last few months. The Federal Agency for Civic Education documented that 74% of those affected had to suffer verbal or written hostility.
The use of violence not only has physical but also psychological consequences. How daily news reported, 82% of victims complain of adverse health effects as a result of these incidents. What is worrying is that one in ten people affected is considering leaving office. A need for reform is obvious: There are calls for a nationwide contact point to protect local officials, which should provide advice and improve cooperation between security authorities, the judiciary and administration.
Political polarization and social tensions
In a broader context, experts mention the causes of the increase in hatred and violence against local politicians. Political polarization, social inequality and inflation play a role in this worrying development. There are also voices calling for laws to be tightened to better prosecute politically motivated attacks. Current discussions in the Federal Council aim to adapt the penalties for coercion and attacks on local politicians to those for top politicians.
The situation calls for more than just stricter laws. Trained police and judiciary staff are also needed to respond specifically to the feedback from those affected. In the interests of a stable democracy, support and protection for local elected officials should be strengthened - because without them, a vibrant civil society is hardly possible.
