Price increase at VMT: Tickets will be more expensive from August!

For everyone who regularly uses public transport in Central Thuringia, a change is coming on August 1st. The Central Thuringia Transport Association (VMT) increases ticket prices by a total of 7.26 percent. This is referred to as a small but not to be underestimated increase - and this in times of rising living costs.

The new prices are as follows: Single trips for adults will then cost 2.90 euros, previously it was 2.70 euros. For children the price has been increased from 1.80 euros to 1.90 euros. On a positive note, tickets that have already been purchased remain valid until the end of October 2025.

Background to the price increase

The price increase has several reasons. On the one hand, the transport companies that are organized in the VMT have to take into account the continued rise in energy and personnel costs. In addition, further investments are necessary to maintain the transport offering and meet the needs of passengers. VMT reports that the 16 member companies are facing financial challenges, which have been alleviated by the state's Corona special aid in 2022 and 2023.

It is interesting to mention that the price increase has no impact on the Deutschlandticket, which remains available for 58 euros per month. This ticket, which is very popular, is supported by special funding from the Free State of Thuringia and the federal government.

A look at the competition

And what about other transport associations? From January 1st, 2024, some large transport associations, such as the Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR) or that Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Association (VBB), also with price increases. These range on average between 6.7 and 12.7 percent, with the Augsburg transport and tariff association increasing the most drastically. The VMT, on the other hand, has traditionally made its price changes on August 1st, which is also planned for the coming years.

Whether in the city or in the country – the increased ticket prices will keep many commuters and travelers busy. It remains to be seen how passengers will react to the new tariffs. However, one should always keep in mind that these adjustments could also indirectly contribute to improving and maintaining transport services.
