Large-scale operation in Greiz: Fire brigade rescues 189 residents from a burning house!

A violent basement fire caused extensive emergency operations in Greiz on the night from Saturday to Sunday. Loud MDR The fire department was alerted at 12:50 a.m. when the emergency services noticed heavy smoke coming from a basement window. A total of 189 people, including many children, had to be brought to safety from the apartment building.

The fire department and police did an excellent job with the evacuation. Equipped with heavy breathing apparatus, the firefighters rescued 21 people, nine of whom were slightly injured and suffered from smoke-related problems. The fire started in the basement of the building and could possibly have been caused by garbage or a smoldering fire. More precise information about the cause of the fire and the burning material is still unclear.

Rescue and accommodation of those affected

Those affected were accommodated in a gymnasium while emergency services were able to extinguish the fire relatively quickly. After the operation, numerous residents were able to return to their homes early on Sunday morning. However, part of the house remains uninhabitable for the time being. The damages add up to a mid-five-figure amount, which doesn't make the situation easy for many of the affected tenants, including asylum seekers.

In order to help the evacuated people who cannot stay with relatives, the district organized alternative apartments. Around 50 people found temporary accommodation in friends' or family's apartments as well as in vacant properties. The municipal association reacted quickly to provide those affected with the best possible support.

The incident serves as a reminder of the need for fire safety prevention, particularly in residential buildings that accommodate large numbers of people. The rapid intervention of the emergency services prevented anything worse from happening, but the question remains as to what measures will be taken to avoid such incidents in the future. Those responsible are called upon to ensure safety for all residents.
