Smear campaign? SPD criticizes Union after Sudhof mask report
The case of Margaretha Sudhof is currently being hotly discussed in lunchtime conversations and political debates. The special investigator, who is investigating the procurement of masks during the corona pandemic on behalf of Karl Lauterbach (SPD), recently answered questions from the Health Committee. One topic that is in the room: the SPD's accusations against the Union, which is said to be staging a “smear campaign” against Sudhof, as the SPD health politician Christos Pantazis emphasizes. These allegations were discussed in a meeting that drew attention to Sudhof's investigation results, in which she uncovered Jens Spahn's (CDU) unauthorized ordering of masks, often at the highest prices and contrary to the recommendations of specialist officials.
The reporting on the case cannot be ignored. According to News.de, Spahn procured mass quantities of masks in spring 2020 without needs tests and price negotiations. These decisions resulted in significant billion-dollar risks to the state, while experienced authorities were on hand to develop appropriate strategies. In addition, there are currently around 100 lawsuits pending with a total dispute value of 2.3 billion euros. Pantazis was optimistic about the upcoming findings from Sudhof's interviews, which does not stop the SPD from discussing the possible establishment of an investigative committee, even if it initially refused to cooperate with the AfD.
The critical report
Sudhof's report, originally kept under wraps, runs to nearly 170 pages and was eventually released in unredacted form. Here, the logistical problems of mask procurement were described as “collapsed”. In particular, there is criticism that, despite concerns, Spahn commissioned a logistics company from his home constituency, which caused a lot of dissatisfaction in advance. While CDU MPs like Simone Borchardt question the selection of companies and point out that Spahn himself was not interviewed, Sudhof sticks to her stance and refuses to publicly comment on the allegations in her report.
The discussion about Spahn's crisis management is becoming ever more heated. In Tagesschau.de it is stated that coming to terms with the pandemic is on the political agenda, with the Bundestag now discussing the establishment of a study commission for a comprehensive analysis of the Corona measures. This commission, which consists of 14 MPs and 14 experts, is expected to present recommendations for crisis management by mid-2027. The discussion about the need for such a commission shows that not all questions surrounding pandemic management have been answered.
Prospects and demands
The Bundestag will deal more intensively with the issues of Corona management in the near future. The SWP reports that a corresponding motion is supported by the Union, SPD, Greens and Left. The current budget debate could set an important course, with increasing funding for various security bodies being discussed. Meanwhile, it remains to be seen how the political opponents will position themselves in the coming weeks and whether the investigative committee will be set up.
The bottom line is that the processing of the corona pandemic and the management of mask procurement are far from being completed. Sudhof's upcoming surveys and the possible formation of a study commission could provide crucial new insights that will not only shape politics but also society in the coming years.
