Colorful Michaelmas market in Hildburghausen: tradition meets fun!
What could be better than celebrating the region's traditions? On Sunday, September 28th, the market square in Hildburghausen will be transformed into a hustle and bustle again when the Michaelismarkt opens its gates. The day begins at 9 a.m. with a flea market on Lower and Upper Market Street, which invites visitors to look for special bargains.
The alarm clock rings at 10 a.m. when we start with a hearty morning pint. The program includes white sausage, pretzels and the odd wheat beer. Dealers and stalls create an impressive atmosphere. From 1 p.m., the “Wachberg Musicians” will provide musical entertainment, while the prince couple of the Theresienfest, Therese and Ludwig, mingle with the guests and exchange a few warm words.
Entertainment and activities for the whole family
The Michaelmas market also has a lot to offer for the little ones. A playmobile is available so that the children can let off steam. At 3:30 p.m. it's time to raise the curtain! in the Bürgersaal, when Kristine Stahl presents the popular puppet show “Puss in Boots”. Shops in the city center open for Sunday shopping between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., which offers the opportunity to pick up a new item or two.
A visit to the city museum is also worth it: a special exhibition on Queen Therese of Bavaria opens at 2:30 p.m. In addition, a showcase exhibition from the “Art Meets Walls” network runs until October 20th and treats the eye to creative works.
Historical roots of the Michaelmas market
The Michaelismarkt has a long history that dates back to 1331, when Berthold VII of Henneberg granted the market to the city of Hildburghausen. The market once took place over three days and ensured safe passage for the traders. The name “Michaelismarkt” is derived directly from Michaelmas Day, which is celebrated annually on September 29th. Traditionally, this day was an important date for rent and lease payments, as well as for hiring servants and maids.
Michaelmas Day is dedicated to the archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. The archangel Michael is particularly tough - he is considered the defender of the faith and the conqueror of Lucifer. His symbolic representation in art often shows him in armor with a sword or soul scales (the weather and the harvest are often the themes associated with peasant rules for Michaelmas Day).
In many communities this day is still celebrated today with church services and festivities, with Michaelism having a consistently cultural significance. In Hildburghausen, the Michaelismarkt is valued as one of the largest and most colorful events of the year. One more reason not to miss it!
