Strawberry action in Ratscher: Thousands of self-pickers storm the field!

Summertime not only brings sun and warm temperatures, but also ripe, juicy strawberries, which are particularly popular in the region around Schleusingen. Last Saturday morning, numerous visitors milled about the strawberry field in Ratscher, and even before the official opening time, the first self-pickers were patiently standing in front of the gate. As inSuedthueringen reports, cars with license plates from all over southern Thuringia (IK, SHL, SM, HBN) were parked nearby and thus testified to their popularity fruity activity.

The strawberry season has a long tradition in the region and offers not only fresh fruit, but also a real family experience. On Christian's strawberry farm you can visit various fields in the following locations: Eußenhausen, Rohr, Schleusingen/Ratscher, Witzelroda, Teutleben and Bad Blankenburg. The strawberries here are known to be completely different in terms of taste and freshness than the products sold in the supermarket.

Challenges of strawberry summer

But not everything is going smoothly this season. The current challenges that affect many strawberry farmers are also noticeable here. The strawberry field in Ratscher was temporarily not open for harvesting, which put a damper on hobby gardeners. Strawberry cultivation is a sensitive matter. It is therefore advisable to pay attention to minimal packaging and short transport routes so that the incomparable taste of the strawberries, which differs significantly from industrial products, can be fully appreciated.

Preparations in the fields usually begin in March, and the actual picking time usually begins at the beginning of June, which this year coincides perfectly with the summer weather. The strawberry varieties that grow in the fields are carefully selected and cultivated here, for example, in tunnels to create optimal conditions for growth. This is also the reason why the tunnels are closed in spring and opened and closed several times a day depending on the weather, as Hof Moorhörn describes.

An exciting family experience

The numerous varieties – from Flair to Ines – and the different cultivation techniques have one goal: to offer visitors an unforgettable taste experience. Bumblebee colonies that are brought into the tunnels for pollination are an environmentally friendly solution and are active even in cooler temperatures. From the beginning of June to the end of July, visitors to the region can harvest fresh strawberries and the whole family can have a lot of fun.

In addition, the Christians Strawberry Telephone informs its customers daily about the current opening times and prices, especially during the high season even up to the hour. So if you want to experience for yourself how sweet and fresh the strawberries from the field taste, you should head to the fields - the healthy harvest awaits!
