A new era for disaster control was ceremoniously ushered in in Hildburghausen on September 24, 2025. The handover of the most modern vehicles and equipment took place in the disaster control center, which is intended to massively strengthen the operational readiness of the fire brigades and disaster control. District Administrator Sven Gregor and State Secretary Andreas Bausewein were among those present; small celebrations with appropriate catering from a field kitchen created a festive atmosphere. The vehicles handed over include a personnel transport vehicle for the Heldburg base fire department and a turntable ladder vehicle for the Hildburghausen fire department, to name just a few. In addition to the vehicles, a telecommunications operation center was also put into operation after 2.5 years of renovation. Sustainable investments in disaster protection
As has become known in the last few weeks, the Thuringian state government is planning a double increase in the disaster protection fund, which currently stands at around three million euros. This increase is a direct response to the events of the major fire that broke out in July of this year and affected an area of 270 hectares - the largest forest fire area in Thuringia in 30 years. Interior State Secretary Bausewein announced additional support from the Free State of Thuringia to cushion the financial consequences for the affected districts, as the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district is expected to have to cover around 50,000 euros.[mdr.de]
In the wake of these developments, the VDMA (Association of German Mechanical and Plant Engineering) also sees the need for comprehensive re-equipment of fire departments in Germany. Dr. Tobias Ehrhard from the VDMA emphasizes that many fire departments at over 30,000 locations need technical equipment that needs to be renewed in line with new security policy challenges. A link between fire service technology and industry should help to implement procurement processes quickly and efficiently in order to equip the emergency services in the best possible way.[firefighting association.de]
