Schleusingen opens its first bicycle street: cyclists in the majority!

Something is happening in the area of cycling in Schleusingen: a new cycle route has been officially opened. Häfnersberg Street will become the city's first bicycle street and is already attracting a lot of attention. This designation took place earlier this week, and the city has done good groundwork to inform cyclists of the new rule.

The first clues are now on the asphalt; They can be found at the entrance to Zeile/Eisfelder Straße and at the intersection behind the swimming pool. Main office manager Sebastian Fleischmann stated that the corresponding street signs are already in place and will be installed this week. These signs, which show a white bicycle in a blue circle, represent the bicycle route and bring with them new rules for traffic.

Rules and benefits for cyclists

But what exactly does this mean for cyclists? Only bicycles, pedelecs and e-scooters are allowed to travel in cycle streets - motorized traffic does not have the say here. This creates a pleasant atmosphere for everyone who chooses a bicycle as a means of transport. The maximum speed is 30 km/h, which means cyclists can enjoy greater safety. The road traffic regulations (StVO) stipulate that cars and motorcycles are not allowed to hinder or endanger cycling traffic. A minimum distance of 1.50 meters must be maintained when overtaking cyclists, which ensures additional safety.

With the plan to promote the use of bicycles, the federal government aims to relieve traffic problems and wants to protect the climate. The national cycling plan (NRVP) promotes the expansion of cycling infrastructure by 2030 and advocates a change in transport by highlighting cycle routes. The ADAC also supports these efforts to improve the safety and quality of cycle paths.

Bicycle streets as a future project

Bicycle streets are an important part of urban mobility. The aim is to bring cyclists to the fore and offer them safe routes. A survey shows that 83% of cyclists find cycle paths safe and 48% prefer them to other cycle paths. It is clear that these new regulations can also improve the quality of life of residents - especially if matches can be made with additional symbols such as “Residents free”.

In Germany there is now a total length of 1,669 kilometers of bicycle roads, but this only accounts for 0.2% of all public roads. This shows that there is still a lot of room for improvement. Cities like Bremen already offer examples of well-implemented bicycle zones, and the ADAC and other organizations are stepping up to further promote such initiatives.

Schleusingen has taken a step in the right direction with the introduction of the first bicycle street. The city relies on a good hand at motivating cyclists and encouraging the switch from cars to bicycles. It's great that the regulations for cyclists are changing - this makes riding on two wheels not only safer, but also more attractive!
