Swimming pool in Veilsdorf Monastery: reopening after extensive renovation!
A very special day for Veilsdorf Monastery! On July 3, 2025, the swimming pool opened its doors again after extensive renovation work - just in time for the start of the holidays. The opening was celebrated with a small, fine program in which the children from the “Unterm Regenbogen” kindergarten played a central role. They brought atmosphere to the newly renovated bathroom, which is now open to the public again after almost a year of construction.
The renovation was urgently needed. The swimming pool, which turns 90 years old this year, was inaugurated in 1934 and required extensive work to make it safe for future generations. As part of the renovation, a new liner was installed in the large pool, the level of the pool was increased and new diving depths were created. This makes swimming more attractive for water lovers big and small. But the little swimmers are also catered for: a new paddling pool has been created, which is specially designed for the youngest visitors.
Financing and fundraising
The necessary funds for the renovation of the large pool came from grants and a contribution from the community. However, additional funds are still needed for the new paddling pool. A call for donations was launched to ensure the financing of this heartfelt project. Donations can be transferred directly to the Veilsdorf community. The account information is as follows:
- IBAN: DE79 8405 4040 1112 4004 40
- Verwendungszweck: Kinderplanschbecken
Transfer receipts are considered donation receipts for amounts up to 200 euros. The first donations have already been received, which shows that citizens are behind their swimming pool.
Swimming pools in Germany – an urgent concern
The reopening of the swimming pool in Kloster Veilsdorf is part of a nationwide trend: The current condition of swimming pools in Germany requires immediate action. An alliance of 15 associations, including the DLRG and the German Swimming Association, is demanding annual investments of one billion euros from the federal government in order to prevent the closure of hundreds of pools. Currently, 60% of primary school children cannot swim safely - a worrying development that cannot be ignored given the safety and health of all swimmers.
According to reports, we have already seen a decline from 7,800 to around 6,000 swimming pools in Germany, with around 50% considered to be in need of renovation. Without comprehensive measures, around 800 public swimming pools could close in the next three years. In view of these numbers, the reopening of the Veilsdorf monastery swimming pool gains additional importance.
The swimming pool is not only a place for leisure activities, but also important for social interaction and lifeguard training. So if we want to preserve swimming pools in our country, it takes commitment - both from the community and from the authorities.
Veilsdorf Monastery has taken a step in the right direction with its newly opened swimming pool facility. Let's hope that many citizens take advantage of the opportunity to have fun in the water together! You can find out more about how other communities can become active in the reports from Tagesschau.
