An important topic is a top priority in Heldburg today: safety for our smallest road users. As part of the road safety days for school starters, children have the opportunity to find out for themselves how they can behave correctly on the road. A special highlight is the Erwin practice dummy, which demonstrates why wearing a seatbelt in the car is so important. During a simulated emergency braking it becomes clear: if Erwin remains unsecured, he will be thrown out of the child seat. Police Chief Enrico Freund explains to the young participants the dangers of not wearing a seatbelt. The second attempt shows how important it is to secure yourself correctly, because this time Erwin stays in his seat, which impressively illustrates the importance of the measure.
Digital support for road safety
But initiatives for traffic education are not only on site, but also digitally. A notable platform is the new online portal “verkehrshelden.com”, which is run by the ADAC Foundation was founded. This is aimed at children, young people, parents and educators and offers exciting content on road safety and accident prevention.
Interactive learning games that have been specially developed for elementary school students make going to school safer. A game called “Traffic Heroes on the Road – Reaching Your Destination Safely with Frieda and Felix” takes the children through various traffic situations and motivates them to actively engage with the topic. The portal also offers materials for parents and teachers to support traffic education in everyday life.
The current numbers speak for themselves
The need for such offers is supported by current statistics. In 2023, a total of 27,235 children had accidents in road traffic in Germany, with tragically 44 children losing their lives. These figures are alarming and show how important preventive measures are to protect young road users.
Road safety for children not only includes wearing a seat belt correctly, but also teaching basic traffic rules. Programs such as the “Child and Traffic” project offer parents information and training to make a significant contribution to traffic education. In addition, numerous materials, such as the “Käpt’n Blaubär traffic guide”, are distributed free of charge to schools and kindergartens in order to safely accompany the little ones in their mobility.
