Public transport changes in the Ilm district: citizens' wishes finally implemented!
On August 10, 2025, a new timetable for the IOV bus service in Ilmenau will come into force in the Ilm district. The public transport committee announced this at a recent meeting. The adjustments are the result of wishes expressed by citizens at passenger conferences last year. These conferences were part of the process of updating the local transport plan in the Ilm district and thus show how important the opinions of citizens are for developments in local public transport. reported in southern Thuringia about these innovations.
What is particularly impressive is that the changes are aimed directly at the needs of passengers. The IOV has recognized that close communication with the population is crucial for the effectiveness of local transport. There will also be a lot on offer for passengers in the coming weeks, during the disruption due to the “Arnstadt wool market” from June 14th to probably August 12th, 2025. Alternative routes and replacement stops will be set up for the affected lines so that citizens do not have to forego their mobility. The individual lines affected include line 1, which handles city traffic between the main train station and the bus station, as well as lines 2, 352, 354 and many more. Further information can be found on the IOV website can be accessed here.
needs of older road users
The plans to adapt public transport are not only in the context of current events, but are also part of a larger trend that focuses on the needs of older people. A comprehensive study on the topic of “public services and service quality in local transport planning” shows how crucial it is to take older road users into account. As part of this analysis, 50 local transport plans were examined and the needs of older citizens were systematically identified. The Federal Institute for Building, Urban and Spatial Research (BBSR) was significantly involved in this study.
In addition to comparing planning practices, the study also records conflicts of interest between different user groups and analyzes 15 specific case studies. The aim is to design public transport so that it meets the needs of all users, with particular consideration being given to the needs of older people. This holistic approach should result in a future guide for local transport planning.
These developments in public transport in the Ilm district are an example of how important citizen participation and the consideration of all road users are. This not only makes getting to the next stop easier, but also makes it more accessible for all generations.
