Giant kohlrabi and 450 kilos of pumpkin: Garden competition in Arnstadt inspires!

When it comes to vegetable weights, the two leaders in kohlrabi and pumpkin are hard to beat. At the recently celebrated40th anniversary of the kohlrabi weighing in Arnstadtthe XXL vegetables once again caught the attention of the audience. Jens Wagner, the weighmaster, found that the largest specimen that was weighed weighed a good nine kilograms, planted in the garden of the hard-working Maik Sauer. The impressive vegetable may not have been a new record compared to previous years, but another guest caused a lot of excitement - an incredible 450 kilo pumpkin that amazed onlookers.

However, there is another success story in the Wartberg region. A kohlrabi was found there, which, at 8.32 kilograms, bears the title of “largest kohlrabi in the region”. This discovery dates back to October 30, 2023, and shows once again that gardening in Austria can bear great fruit. The large kohlrabi from Wartberg brings a breath of fresh air to vegetable cultivation and shows that with a good hand, great yields can also be achieved in the home garden.

The importance of agriculture

The current figures from agriculture also show how important vegetable cultivation is for the entire industry. The agricultural area includes not only high-yield fields, but also those that are still in their infancy - young plants that cannot produce a full yield in the first few years. These aspects are recorded in detail in the annual land use and land use surveys. When it comes to vegetables, all crops that are grown without yard space and other unused areas count towards the total area and illustrate the diversity of local agriculture.

The impressive vegetable weights in Arnstadt and Wartberg not only show the skill of the gardeners, but also the potential that lies in domestic cultivation. Whether with records or not, the joy of gardening and the enthusiasm for exceptional yields remain very popular in the state capital and beyond.
