Drunk driving at the hardware store: Escape and drunk driving exposed!
On Saturday evening, July 13th, 2025, an incident happened in Ilmenau that once again shows the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol. An attentive witness observed a Mitsubishi reversing into a parked car in a Globus hardware store parking lot and then fleeing. The alerted police were able to quickly locate the driver who had fled, a 47-year-old, and during a check they discovered that he had more than 1.1 per mille in his blood and was also driving without a valid driver's license. The damage to the rear of his vehicle did not correspond to the explanations given by him, which stated that it was caused by an accident involving wild animals. The officials could not understand this statement.
The driver must now expect serious consequences. He is being investigated for hit and run, endangering road traffic due to drunkenness and driving without a license, which puts him in a difficult situation.
Alcohol and its consequences
The legal consequences of drunk driving should not be underestimated. According to information from bussgeldkatalog.de, if you have a blood alcohol level (BAC) of 0.5 to 1.09 per mille, you can face fines of up to 500 euros, 2 points in Flensburg and a one-month driving ban. For drivers who repeatedly have a prior alcohol violation, these fines can even rise to up to 1,500 euros. If you have a BAC of 1.1 per mille, you are considered completely unfit to drive and must expect criminal consequences.
The situation is even more critical for novice and young drivers: with a BAC of 0.0 per mille, driving is absolutely prohibited. There is a risk of high fines and points, which can seriously disrupt the driving license process.
Road safety first
Driving without alcohol can not only save your own life, but also that of other road users. As adac.de emphasizes, the alcohol limits are clearly regulated. The relative inability to drive begins as early as 0.3 per mille, which can lead to serious consequences even with seemingly harmless amounts of alcohol. In addition, bus or taxi drivers can also be asked to pay fines of up to 50,000 euros.
It is therefore extremely important for all drivers to use alcohol responsibly. Nature and unpredictability such as accidents involving wild animals are not a valid reason to shirk responsibility. The incident in Ilmenau reminds us once again that safe road traffic is the top priority for everyone.
It is to be hoped that such events will raise awareness among people and encourage them to opt for an alcohol-free and harm-free journey.
