10,000 euro donation: Unforgettable holidays for children with kidney disease in Jena!
In Jena, July 17, 2025 was a very special day for 18 young patients between the ages of 8 and 21. Thanks to a generous donation of 10,000 euros from Rotary Club Weimar Bauhaus They were able to take part in a week-long holiday camp. This initiative was organized by the Kinderdialyse Jena e.V. association and brought a welcome change to the often turbulent and challenging everyday lives of children and young people with chronic kidney disease.
The trip took the group to Naunhof near Leipzig, where various activities such as swimming in the Grillensee, a trip to the popular Leipzig Zoo and climbing adventures in the climbing forest were on the program. Additional experiential team games ensured a lot of fun and laughter together. An interdisciplinary team, consisting of a pediatrician, a psychologist, a urotherapist and four nursing staff, accompanied the group so that medical care was always guaranteed.
On-site medical care
What is particularly pleasing is that despite the health challenges, medical care was not neglected. Two participants received hemodialysis during their free time, while an eight-year-old boy received nocturnal peritoneal dialysis. Six of the children are waiting for a donor organ, while others have already been successfully transplanted. This special form of leisure activity not only gives those affected much-needed relaxation, but also the opportunity to make new friends and strengthen themselves in a relaxed atmosphere.
Judith Mannich, psychologist at the KfH Kidney Center for Children and Adolescents, emphasizes the significant value of such experiences. For many children and young people, it is crucial to experience joy in life and normality, even if they are struggling with serious illness. The holiday season allows them to just be kids and not just define themselves by their illness, like the Jena University Hospital reported.
Thanks to the supporters
The Kinderdialyse Jena e.V. association would like to thank all of its supporters, especially the Rotary Club Weimar Bauhaus as well as the Jena University Hospital and the Board of Trustees for Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation e.V. Such initiatives are of great importance as they show that the community stands together in difficult times. You can also access information about kidney diseases in children and their treatment via the Federal Kidney Association can be accessed. The joint support makes it possible to focus on the concerns of the affected families and to give them back hope and joy in life.
