August-Bebel-Straße: Major construction site starts – hidden treasures await!
In the town of Sandersdorf-Brehna, August-Bebel-Strasse is about to be extensively renovated. From the beginning of August, the road, which has been known for decades as a patchwork of gravel, asphalt and various paving stones, will be completely revitalized. The goal is to sustainably improve the appearance, usability and infrastructure. The work will be carried out in two construction phases, the first of which is now starting, as jenaTV reports.
The planned renovation includes numerous measures aimed at increasing the safety and functionality of the road. The plan is to renew the roadway, sidewalks, street lighting as well as the rain and waste water sewer system. In addition, part of the drinking water pipeline will be renewed and new green spaces will be created in order to improve the quality of life of the residents, as explained in detail by Wittich.
Traffic management during construction work
The renovation work will be accompanied by a complete closure of August-Bebel-Straße. Traffic will be redirected via Delitzscher Straße, with emergency routes set up for pedestrians and cyclists. Temporary parking spaces for cars are also planned at the end of August-Bebel-Straße. It is important that waste disposal and access for fire and rescue services are always guaranteed.
Some trees need to be cut down due to root damage. But that's not the end of the green areas: After the work is completed, 37 new trees of the “City Pear Chanticleer” variety will be planted. These new plantings are intended to contribute to sustainably enriching the cityscape and bringing more greenery into the surrounding area.
Investments in the future
In total, the costs for the renovation work amount to around 2 million euros, of which the city of Sandersdorf-Brehna is providing around 1.4 million euros. Financing will be provided in stages depending on the progress of the construction phases. Information events are also planned for residents to provide information about the measures and promote exchange.
This renovation measure is part of a larger movement to improve the infrastructure in German municipalities. The German Institute for Urban Studies (Difu) estimates that around 372 billion euros will be needed by 2030 to maintain and expand rail networks, roads and paths. Motorized transport causes a significant proportion of greenhouse gas emissions, which is why it is essential to develop and implement sustainable transport concepts, reports Difu.
The August-Bebel-Straße project shows that a lot can be done at the local level to meet the requirements of modern, environmentally friendly mobility while at the same time keeping the well-being of local residents in mind.
