Finally free travel: tram to Ernst-Abbe-Platz from June 30th!

After intensive construction work, there will be a significant improvement in local transport in Jena from June 30, 2025: Tram lines 1 and 4 will then run again to the final stop Ernst-Abbe-Platz. That reports Jena news. A reason to be happy after the track system was completely renovated in recent months.

The construction work, which began in July 2024, encompasses a lot. The old tracks were dismantled and replaced with a modern system of reinforced concrete longitudinal beams and vibration-damping tracks. Switches and overhead lines were also replaced, as were platform edges and paved surfaces. Andreas Möller, managing director of Jena local transport, thanks the passengers for their understanding during the construction period. MDR adds that the original completion was planned for the end of 2024, but had to be postponed indefinitely due to unexpected subsurface defects and material delivery delays.

Test drive and current restrictions

A significant test drive with a 42 meter long light track has already been successful. From August 1st, trams on lines 1 and 4 will run from Lobeda-West to Zwätzen, which will end the long-standing rail replacement service. However, there are still restrictions on Naumburger Straße, which are expected to last until September. The Stifterstrasse stops will not be served for the time being. mobilitaet.jena.de confirms that the tracks and overhead lines in northwestern Jena were modernized by the end of 2023 and the total costs for track construction amounted to around 3.2 million euros.

Meanwhile, work on Ernst-Abbe-Platz is also in full swing. These are expected to last until the end of the year. A further improvement is the new bus connections to Isserstedt, with bus line 16, which runs every hour, as well as the discontinuation of bus line 424 via Isserstedt, which is also on the horizon.

Current construction site overview

The construction work in Jena is diverse and affects different areas. Some of the current construction sites are:

  • Burgauer Weg / Camburger Straße: Vollsperrung bis 24. Juni 2025 wegen Tiefbauarbeiten an der Gasleitung.
  • Carl-Zeiss-Platz: Vollsperrung bis 29. August 2025 aufgrund der Sanierung des Deutschen Optischen Museums.
  • Dammstraße: Vollsperrung bis 30. Juni 2025 wegen Leitungsverlegung.
  • Dorfstraße: Vollsperrung bis 20. Juni 2025 wegen Kanalarbeiten.
  • Haltestelle Nordschule: Halbseitige Sperrung bis 29. August 2025 aufgrund des Umbaus der Straßenbahnhaltestelle.

Looking ahead to the coming months, it is clear that Jena is experiencing an exciting phase of growth and upgrading of public transport. The residents' patience will hopefully soon pay off when the trams can run their rounds again as scheduled and everyday life will be made easier.
