Rhönforum e.V.: Thuringian Rhön is fighting to catch up with tourism!

A lot is happening in the Thuringian Rhön - and not just in the economic and tourist areas. The Economic mirror Thuringia informed that the Rhönforum e.V., an essential organization for the promotion of the region, continues to advocate for the interests of the Thuringian Rhön. Despite the loss of state funding from the Free State of Thuringia, the association relies on membership contributions from cities, municipalities, companies and the districts of Wartburgkreis and Schmalkalden-Meiningen in order to continue its work.

The Rhönforum's tasks are diverse: it represents the interests of the region, advises on projects and coordinates regional initiatives. But when it comes to tourism infrastructure, the association sees a need to catch up. Over 10 million euros were invested in conceptual measures around ten years ago, but competition from Hesse and Bavaria has severely affected the Thuringian Rhön's tourism development.

Inter-municipal cooperation and regional strengthening

Another aspect is inter-communal cooperation, which, according to a study by Difu, has been discussed for decades. These collaborations have the potential to revitalize the region economically, but often encounter obstacles such as egoism and inadequate political frameworks. Clear goal definitions and flexible cooperation arrangements are recommended to support active actors. In order to be successful in the long term, institutional contexts are necessary that go beyond the familiar forms of control.

Close cooperation with neighbors in Hesse and Bavaria is also seen as essential. An example of this is the Überlandwerk Rhön, a regional energy supply company that promotes exchange between the districts and thus contributes to strengthening regional cohesion.

Discover local treasures

Anyone who visits the Thuringian Rhön can look forward to some special experiences. Recommended hiking trails, the “extra tours”, are certified by the German Hiking Institute and combine nature experiences with regional history. The Point Alpha memorial is particularly recommended as an impressive place of learning that brings the past of the division and reunification of Germany to life.

And the weather forecast also promises good things for the region: Loud WOWT The last showers move to the southwest in the morning, the rest of the day remains dry and temperatures are in the 40s, with a high around 50 degrees. A little sunshine is also in sight towards the afternoon - perfect for exploring the beautiful landscape of the Thuringian Rhön and enjoying the regional offerings.
