Topping-out ceremony in Ilmenau: Timber construction project focuses on climate protection and innovation!

An important topping-out ceremony was recently celebrated in Ilmenau: the construction of a multi-story wooden residential building has officially begun. With this pilot project, which is supported by one million euros in funding from the state of Thuringia, the housing and building company (IWG) is focusing on innovative ideas in sustainable housing. The new residential building will offer 29 apartments, mainly in two and four room layouts. With 50 parking spaces and 40 bicycle parking spaces, the project also provides practical amenities for future residents.

This building is unique in Thuringia because it specifically uses regional wood. A total of 3,000 cubic meters of beetle wood from the city forest are processed, which not only contributes to the use of local resources but also helps protect the climate. The innovative construction combines clay walls and plasterboard cladding to optimize fire protection. It is particularly worth mentioning that the processing is carried out by a company from the Rhön that specializes in solid wood walls.

Sustainable construction in focus

in southern Thuringia. With a total volume of around 14 million euros, the project is a good example of strengthening the regional value chain.

The construction project expects a higher supply of softwood due to climate change and forest conversion. This fits well with the goals of the Federal Ministries for Housing, Urban Development and Construction as well as food and agriculture, which want to promote timber construction through the timber construction initiative. Wood is considered a renewable raw material with positive properties that are not only beneficial for the climate - wood stores CO₂ and causes lower emissions when manufacturing products.

A far-sighted step for the future

The timber construction initiative is committed to reducing barriers to climate-friendly construction and offers incentives for the use of renewable materials. The project implemented in Ilmenau has already shown that the focus on resource-efficient use and long-term carbon sequestration are central concerns for the developers. Ilmenau is doing well as a pioneer in sustainable architecture not only in the region but also nationwide.

Such projects not only revolutionize housing construction, but also set an example for environmentally friendly construction. Let's stay tuned to see how the image of living in Thuringia continues to develop and what new projects will be realized soon!
