91-year-old senior woman seriously injured after fall in Bockhorn – police are looking for witnesses!
A tragic incident occurred yesterday afternoon in Bockhorn when a 91-year-old woman was seriously injured while avoiding two cyclists. According to Tixio, the accident happened around 4:15 p.m. on Lange Straße, at number 12. The senior citizen was just about to get into her car, which was parked on the parking lane, when the cyclists, who were apparently riding on the sidewalk, whizzed right past her and forced them to get out of the way.
Unfortunately, the old lady lost her balance and fell to the ground. Not only did she injure her hip, but she also broke her wrist. An ambulance was immediately called and took the injured woman to hospital. Meanwhile, the cyclists fled the scene of the accident, making the situation even more unfortunate.
The search for witnesses
The police in Wilhelmshaven/Friesland have already confirmed the incident and are asking the public for help. Witnesses who saw something or who can provide information about the escaped cyclists are asked to call 04453-978620. Such incidents not only raise significant questions about road safety in the region, but also highlight the dangers older people face on the roads.
Seniors are in fact particularly at risk, as the Federal Ministry of Transport highlights. In 2023, 59.3% of cyclists and pedestrians who were fatally injured were over 65 years old. These statistics show that older road users are more vulnerable, not only due to physical limitations, but also to changes in cognitive abilities as they age.
Improving traffic safety
To raise awareness of this issue, the ministry offers various programs to improve road safety for older people. Events such as the German Traffic Safety Days provide information about relevant topics such as cycling, Pedelec use and the correct use of walkers. Such a commitment could also raise awareness among inexperienced cyclists so that they will be more considerate of seniors in the future.
It is important that we as a society adapt to the fact that mobility should also be maintained in old age, but under safer conditions. Projects and campaigns such as those under the motto "I feel young. I just need longer" promote respectful interaction between younger road users and older people. Only together can we help make the roads safer for everyone.
The tragedy in Bockhorn should remind us to be careful with each other and to take seriously the dangers that lurk in everyday traffic. We hope that the senior will get back on her feet soon and wish her a speedy recovery.
