Bicycle accident in Kahla: 79-year-old falls, helmet saves life!

On June 20, 2025, reports on bicycle accidents in Germany will increase, especially when the unsafe infrastructure comes into play. This is also confirmed by an incident that recently occurred in Kahla. A 79-year-old cyclist fell as she drove on the Saale cycle path and got stuck on a curb. Fortunately, the woman wore a bicycle helmet that saved her from serious injuries. Despite some minor injuries, she was taken to a hospital for further treatment, as reported by the news.de

The fall leaves the question in the room: How safe is cycling in today's world? According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, there were around 27,400 bike accidents in 2023 in which no other road users were involved. Accident research of the insurers (UDV) states that the majority of these accidents, especially in the winter months, are due to weather conditions and poor infrastructure. Almost half of the seriously injured cyclists were involved in single accidents, with dangerous elements such as curb edges and tram rails often lead to falling, as reported by the Tagesschau

The popularity of cycling

Cycling culture in Germany has increased significantly in recent years. This applies especially to older people who discover the advantages of cycling. However, a study by the UDV that the safety on country roads is not sufficient. On average, four cyclists are killed every week, while 58 are seriously injured, often because they are overlooked on these less monitored roads. Critical points are in particular intersections where 68 percent of the serious accidents occur.

A ray of hope could be the introduction of safe transitions and the creation of bike paths away from the motorway traffic. The UDV also calls for speed limits at poorly visible areas to reduce the risk of cycling. The numbers are alarming: In 2023 there were 189 deadly and almost 3,000 seriously injured cyclists outside of urban areas.

What cyclists should consider

The recommendations for cyclists, especially on country roads, are clear: avoid busy roads, and always pay attention to reflective clothing and light on your bike. Fahr behavior also plays a major role, because almost two thirds of the cyclists who have an accident indicated that their own driving behavior contributed to fall. Some simply drove too quickly for the conditions.

The tragic fall of the 79-year-old woman in Kahla is another wake-up call that should be a top priority, especially for cyclists. The joint efforts of all those involved, from politics to road users themselves, are required to make cycling more secure in Germany.
