3,700 cyclists in one week: New counting device installed on the Saale cycle path!

On August 7, 2025, a new chapter in cycling traffic recording was opened in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district. The first stationary wheel counting device was installed on the cycle path in Schwarza on an important commuter route between Rudolstadt, Bad Blankenburg and Saalfeld. Rudolstadt.de reports that an impressive 3,737 cyclists used the route within the first week—that's an average of 481 cyclists per day. These figures clearly show how high cycling traffic is in the region.

The intelligent counting device distinguishes cyclists from pedestrians and provides valuable information about the utilization and usage behavior of the cycle path. Such data is of interest not only for road users, but also for planning future investments in the cycle path network. District Administrator Marko Wolfram emphasizes that this information can help demonstrate the need for investments. The project was supported by Dirk Fischer, the district route manager, who thanked the city of Rudolstadt for its support and the provision of the property.

Importance of cycling traffic counts

Sensitivity to cycling traffic counts is increasing across Germany. Plan F emphasizes that such counts are crucial for the optimization and evaluation of cycling planning. In Bielefeld, for example, registered bicycle traffic counts have been carried out since 2019, with the city continually working to expand the number of counting points. These counts are not only designed for a fixed period of time, but also temporarily in order to immediately record the effects of construction sites or new cycle paths.

A look at the recording data from 2022 shows that almost three million cyclists were counted in Bielefeld. Artur-Ladebeck-Straße recorded particularly high frequencies. These developments underline that the permanent counting points play a central role in the assessment and planning of cycling.

Projects to promote cycling

But the challenges of cycling traffic planning should not be underestimated. The Difu project specifically examines the obstacles and “good practices” in promoting cycling in cities such as Aachen, Munich and Potsdam. A special quick check for municipal cycling planning is offered, which helps municipalities reflect on the current situation and identify problems. Experts from various disciplines work together to develop practical solutions.

It turns out that many cities are already taking concrete measures to promote cycling. For example, in Frankfurt am Main, innovative administrative structures are being created to guarantee quick implementation, while Hamburg relies on professional project management. These examples make it clear that the mobility transition is becoming more and more established on the roads and that good projects are in the starting blocks.

In summary, it can be seen that recording the number of cyclists and continually optimizing cycling networks are not only important, but also necessary in order to meet the increasing demands of commuters and leisure cyclists. The Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district has taken the first step in the right direction with the new counting device. It remains exciting to see what developments will follow in the region and beyond.
