A safe space for girls: The Wednesday Girls in Rudolstadt

A very special meeting is held every Wednesday in the Rudolstadt town church of St. Andreas: the “Wednesday Girls”. This group of girls, consisting of Luise, Fabienne and Klara - all around 12 years old - come together to discuss personal topics, exchange ideas and explore their faith. How MDR reports, the weekly meeting provides a safe space where they can talk about everything from bullying to arguments with friends to problems at school.

The group is supported by Ulrike Krautwurst, the community education worker. Not only do the girls feel comfortable in church, they also value the opportunity to talk about God and the Bible, making faith a central part of their meetings. For example, Fabienne wears a cross around her neck and repeatedly asks questions about faith. This is also reflected in the fact that some of them have expressed a desire to learn more about their spiritual journey in the future, partly because they have seen videos about faith on platforms such as TikTok, like ekmd supplemented.

Shared experiences

In addition to the in-depth conversations, the group also ensures social times. At their meetings there is not only cocoa, but also chocolate buttons with the letters M and M for “Wednesday girls”. One idea that was recently successfully implemented was an overnight stay at the church, during which the girls explored the building with flashlights. The next event is already in the starting blocks: a shared pizza meal at an Italian restaurant, financed by the sale of homemade sandwiches from the Rudolstadt reading garden.

The “Mittwochsmädels” are an excellent example of the diverse forms of church work with young people. These initiatives provide a platform for connecting faith, community and personal development. The Evangelical Youth tries to meet the needs of young people by creating places for exchange and meeting, such as ekd highlights. The aim is to actively involve young people and support them in developing their identity.

This shows that the “Wednesday girls” not only talk about their current challenges, but also grow together and strengthen their relationship with faith or community. In this safe environment, the girls can discuss their topics without fear of being disturbed - because boys are not welcome here because they believe that they would disrupt the conversations.

It will be exciting to see how the group develops and what topics they will address in the future. The weekly meetings are not only an opportunity for the girls to reflect, but also an opportunity to experience community and rediscover their faith.
