Fund helps Saalfelder Höhe: forest fire costs district 50,000 euros!
On July 2nd of this year, a devastating forest fire broke out in the Saalfelder Höhe in Thuringia and spread over an area of around 270 hectares. This is the largest known forest fire area in Thuringia for at least 30 years. Hundreds of firefighters were deployed to fight embers and fires that flared up again. This “largest forest fire in three decades” hit the region hard, but the fire now appears to be extinguished, as n-tv.de reports.
After intensive extinguishing work, in which firefighters from other federal states and various Thuringian municipalities also provided support, the disaster in the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district was lifted on Tuesday. Around 50 firefighters from the district are currently dealing with residual fires and starting the clean-up work. To ensure safety, a ban on entry to the burned area was issued because of the danger posed by charred tree remains and hidden embers. The emergency services receive further support from employees of the construction yards in Gräfenthal, Probstzella and Saalfeld, according to tagesschau.de.
Support and follow-up costs
In view of the enormous challenges, Interior State Secretary Andreas Bausewein (SPD) has announced that the state is helping the Saalfeld-Rudolstadt district with a disaster protection fund. This fund currently comprises around three million euros. The district is expected to bear costs of around 50,000 euros itself, while the rest will be covered by the fund and possibly additional state resources. However, the exact amount of the operational costs incurred has not yet been determined, reports n-tv.de.
The forest region is viewed with a certain optimism. Experts such as Horst Sproßmann from Thüringen Forst and Silvester Tamás from the nature conservation association Nabu Thuringia emphasize the flora's natural ability to regenerate. Many larger mammals and birds are usually able to escape the flames, while rodents and insects find refuge in burrows. However, some young mammals and birds are likely to be affected.
Forest fires in focus
Forest fires are an issue of increasing importance, particularly in Germany, where population density is high and forests have multiple functions, including protection, use and recreation. The federal administration has been collecting data on forest fires since the 1970s in order to reduce the number and size of fires in the future. Forecasts and risk assessments are crucial to preventing forest fires. Related statistics on forest fires, which include area sizes, causes and costs, can be viewed online, as can be found at ble.de.
The events in Saalfeld kept the region on tenterhooks and once again underlined the urgency of forest fire protection measures. The hope remains that nature can recover and the affected areas will soon bloom again.
