Gohrischheide in flames: 600 rescuers fight against forest fire!

The situation in Gohrischheide has become more serious in the last few days. A forest fire that has been raging for several days has already burned an area of around 2,100 hectares. Over 600 helpers, supported by the latest technology such as fire fighting robots and helicopters, are on duty to contain the fire. However, the conditions on site are anything but easy, mainly due to the area's decades of military use. These have left dangerous ammunition residues in the ground, which represent an additional source of danger, as Deutschlandfunk reports.

The first signs of smoke were spotted on Tuesday. A disaster alarm was triggered for three communities on Thursday, while around 45 residents were evacuated from Jacobsthal train station on the night from Friday to Saturday. Around 100 people had previously had to leave their homes due to the dangerous situation in Heidehäuser. The emergency services are racing around the clock to combat the flames, which could spread quickly due to strong winds and high temperatures.

A critical environment

The danger of extinguishing fires should not be underestimated. The operations management has already drawn up a protection concept. Bulldozers are used to build protective strips, while unmanned fire-fighting robots from Brandenburg support the fire-fighting work on site. According to Ingenieur, the most recent satellite observation shows an increase in the burned area from initially 200 to now 2,100 hectares. This not only causes trouble locally, the smoke also extends to Berlin, resulting in additional warnings in several districts.

The region is not only affected by this fire, but also faces a growing risk of forest fires in general. Climate change, which brings with it longer dry periods and higher temperatures, is increasingly endangering forests in Germany. Statista points out that over 1,200 hectares were lost to forest fires in Germany in 2023, and in 2022 the highest value in the last 30 years was reached at over 3,000 hectares.

Outlook and possible risks

The forecast calls for rain on Monday, but this could bring new risks with new gusts of wind. The situation remains tense and emergency services are doing everything they can to extinguish the flames while maintaining evacuation measures. The Gohrischheide, a former military training area on the border of Saxony and Brandenburg, is particularly vulnerable to legacy military contamination and the difficult weather conditions.

The challenge that everyone involved has to overcome is enormous. It remains to be hoped that the weather situation will bring some relief in the coming month and that the dangers posed by the rapidly increasing risk of forest fires can be brought under control.
