Unterweißbach fears for safety: flash floods threaten residents!
In the small community of Unterweißbach the full force of the forces of nature is once again evident. The heavy rain in Oberweißbach repeatedly results in violent flash floods, which frighten the residents. Steffen Günther, the local mayor of Unterweißbach, points out the urgent need to improve flood protection measures. He fears for residents that the flash floods with waves up to 70 centimeters high could have catastrophic effects on the infrastructure. These warnings are not made out of thin air, as numerous reports and criminal case analyzes show. According to MDR, tremors have already led to steadily increasing nervousness among residents.
The Weißbach, which flows through Unterweißbach, not only brings with it the beautiful sides of nature, but also risks. The stream runs underground over a length of around 700 meters and therefore often endangers the surrounding area during heavy rainfall. The problems are compounded by a flood protection rake made of logs that was installed two years ago and only works to a limited extent. The rake runs the risk of becoming clogged with trash, debris, and even old car tires. This significantly limits its effectiveness.
Urgent need for action
But the technical equipment is only one aspect of the problem. Steffen Günther is emphatically calling for the 150 meter long canal to be renewed, the lower part of which is considered to be in danger of collapsing. “We have long recognized the need for a renewal, but the financial resources are not available,” says Günther. This renewal work could cost the municipality between 750,000 and 1 million euros, a sum that is painful for Unterweißbach. The funding from the Thüringer Aufbaubank has been waiting for seven years, and one application has already been classified as incorrect. New applications are now being prepared to finally secure financial support.
The Thuringian Ministry for the Environment, Energy and Nature Conservation is aware of the dangers and has announced an integral flood protection concept for the Weißbach catchment area. This could help the community defuse the high-risk situation. In this context, reference is also made to the possibility of receiving financial support via the “Aktion Fluss funding guideline”. This concept could make a real difference for affected citizens.
Climate change and its consequences
The increasing frequency of heavy rain events shows that the need for effective flood protection is also linked to climate change. The German Weather Service offers a catalog of heavy rain events that shows us which regions in Germany are most affected. For Unterweißbach there is much to suggest that flood prevention measures have not been sufficiently implemented in recent years. The pressure on those responsible is growing, and citizens are asking themselves: When will action be taken?
Recent analyzes by the Federal Environment Agency show that there is a clear need to catch up here. Flood prevention measures are not yet sufficiently taken into account in spatial planning, which leads to increasing threats to people and nature. It seems high time to focus more on cooperation and coordination processes to ensure safety for everyone. The ideas for an effective adaptation strategy are there, all that is needed is a good hand for implementation and solid financing.
In the coming weeks it could become clear whether the request for financial support for the urgently needed measures in Unterweißbach will finally be approved. The residents hope that their voices will also be heard and that a permanent solution to the dangers posed by heavy rain and flooding will be developed.
