Demonstration in Meiningen: Solidarity for imprisoned Maja T.
In the coming days, Germany will be marked by various demonstrations that pursue a common goal: solidarity with the left-wing activist Maja T, who is imprisoned in Hungary. Such an event will take place in Meiningen on Friday, June 20th, at 6 p.m. The demo is organized by the Left Schmalkalden-Meiningen and the Left Youth (Solid) Schmalkalden-Meiningen. The campaign is also supported by the DGB Schmalkalden Meiningen and the Left Suhl as well as the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance Meiningen. This mobilization will be complemented by a press conference on June 14th, at which prominent participants such as Wolfram Jarosch, Maja T.'s father, and members of the Greens and the Left had their say. inSuedthueringen reports in detail about the background.
But voices against the Hungarian authorities are not only loud in Meiningen. Another demonstration will take place in Leipzig on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m. at the Bayerischer Bahnhof. Around 400 people gather here under the motto “No Extradition – Antifascist demonstration in Leipzig due to Maja’s extradition to the Orban regime in Hungary”. Maja T., who identifies as non-binary, was handed over to the Hungarian authorities a week ago. She is accused of being involved in attacks on participants at a neo-Nazi event in Budapest. There are great fears that she could become a victim of anti-queer discrimination in Hungary. The route of the demo leads along Windmühlenstrasse, the southern Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, Peterssteinweg and Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse before ending on Wolfgang-Heinze-Strasse. Tag24 announces further details about the possible traffic restrictions during the event.
Setting an example for Maja T.
The developments surrounding Maja T.'s imprisonment are not isolated. On a nationwide level, anti-queer tendencies and pressure on the LGBTQ+ community are increasing. This problem is also clear in another large demonstration that recently took place in Berlin and Brandenburg. Gathered under the motto “Choose Love,” around 100,000 people across Germany took part in protests to draw attention to the dangers to the achievements of queer rights. While the mood online becomes harsher, the appeal to voters is clear: it is important to support queer-friendly parties. rbb24 highlights the need to defend existing rights, while prominent supporters such as Conchita Wurst attended the event.
It is clear that solidarity with Maja T. goes far beyond regional borders and represents a movement across society. Whether in Meiningen or Leipzig, the demonstrators show that they are ready to stand up for the concerns of the queer community and to defend themselves against discrimination against minorities. These actions are not only a signal for Maja, but also a strong signal for the community as a whole. The pressure on political decision-makers remains high - and, thank God, so does the support of civil society.
