Sunny times for Schmalkalden-Meiningen: PV systems are booming!
A lot is happening in the area of renewable energies in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district. The use of photovoltaics (PV) to generate energy is increasing rapidly here. More and more citizens are turning to solar sources to obtain their energy. According to a report by the Thuringian state energy agency Thega, households and companies are increasingly getting their electricity from the sun. Just a few years ago, the district was of little importance in green electricity production. But that is changing as demand for clean energy grows. Andreas Braun from the Thuringian Energy Agency confirms that the number of solar farms in the district has increased significantly. Apart from the existing windmill with an output of 600 kilowatts, there are currently no new wind turbines in the region, which places the focus of energy production heavily on solar energy. In southern Thuringia also reports the state energy agency.
A look at the numbers shows the extent of this development. Within a single year, the number of solar systems in Thuringia increased by around 30,000. As of December 31, 2024, there were already a total of around 100,000 PV systems in the Free State. Around 12,700 new solar systems were installed in the first half of 2024 alone. Compared to the previous year (with 12,108 new systems), it is clear that enthusiasm for solar energy is continuously growing. The Wartburg district is the pioneer with 8,249 systems, followed by Eichsfeld with 7,087 systems and the state capital Erfurt with 5,286 installed systems. At the end of the list is the Sonneberg district with just 2,326 systems. Thega – Solar Energy Service Center shows how much momentum this development has gained.
Growth through new technologies
The fact that both large solar systems and small balcony PV systems are on the rise proves the high demand for these technologies. In the first half of 2024, 5,843 new balcony PV systems were installed. This brings the total number to around 14,000 in Thuringia. This represents a dramatic increase compared to the previous year, when almost 3,000 new systems were added. On average, there are now 47 photovoltaic systems per 1,000 inhabitants, which represents a real step towards a sustainable energy supply.
The total installed capacity of all PV systems in Thuringia is now 2,801 megawatts, which already covers 23 percent of the electricity consumption in the Free State. Last year it was still 19 percent. This growth signals not only a change in energy policy, but also an increased awareness among the population of the need for renewable energy. Thega has provided very good information on this topic.
In summary, it can be said that solar energy is on the rise in Schmalkalden-Meiningen and throughout Thuringia and not only contributes to an environmentally friendly energy supply, but also stimulates the local economy. This is good business for everyone who wants to behave in an environmentally conscious manner and at the same time relies on a sustainable energy concept. It remains exciting to see how this potential will continue to unfold in the coming years.
