New Müntzer exhibition in Allstedt: Experience history up close!
History comes to life in Allstedt - a fascinating place will become the setting for a new exhibition on Sunday, July 11th, 2025. The show with the title “Being and Appearance. Thomas Müntzer” takes visitors into the eventful past of the pastor and reformer Thomas Müntzer. The setting is the impressive Allstedt Castle, which is open to the public again after a three-year closure. My church newspaper reports that the Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff (CDU), will take part in the opening, which underlines the importance of the event.
The exhibition is part of the two-year decentralized state exhibition “Justice 1525”, which was launched to commemorate the 500th anniversary of Müntzer's death and the Peasants' War from 1524/25. Especially on this historic occasion, the themes of justice and power are brought to the fore. In an artistic “Glowing Horizons” course that began in May, the first installations on social change and the conflicts of the time were presented.
Experiential production
The focus of the new exhibition is clearly on Müntzer's work in Allstedt. How Schloss-Allstedt.de announces, visitors can immerse themselves in an immersive experience in the central courtyard room, the historic location of the “Prince’s Sermon”. Using virtual reality, guests gain a deep insight into Müntzer's life, with the narrative given a special focus by his wife Ottilie von Gersen.
Particular emphasis is also placed on Müntzer's debate with Martin Luther. After Müntzer was sent to the parish office in Zwickau as a follower of Luther, he soon developed his own theology, which took on more radical features and ultimately led to a conflict with Luther. These tensions between the two reformers are also addressed in the show, as is the historical context of History-knowledge.de shows. Here the different views on how to deal with the peasant wars were highlighted.
Cultural-historical reflection
Another area of the exhibition deals with the culture of remembrance and questions the image of Müntzer, who is often characterized as a “peasant war leader”. The multi-dimensional representation of Allstedt's city history, which is illuminated in this context, gives visitors the opportunity to deal with the complex figure of Müntzer and to better understand his role in the uprisings of 1525.
The Cultural Foundation has taken responsibility for the listed palace complex since July 2022 and has initiated a comprehensive renovation. By securing the historical building structure and redesigning the exhibition rooms, a place will be created in the future that will keep the history and cultural identity of the region alive. With this new exhibition, those responsible have demonstrated a good knack for impressively presenting the historical and cultural legacy of Thomas Müntzer.
