Citizens discuss the future of heat supply in Sonneberg!

The city of Sonneberg is about to take a significant step towards sustainable heat supply. A citizens' information evening on municipal heat planning will take place on August 5, 2025. In the cozy atmosphere of the Wolkenrasen district center at Friesenstrasse 14, which opens its doors at 5 p.m., citizens should have the opportunity to actively participate in the planning. This describes it insuedthueringen.de this important event.

City spokeswoman Cindy Heinkel emphasizes that the evening serves to explain the current status of the project and to create space for your own ideas. The commissioned specialist offices ENMA GmbH and CIMAberatung + Management GmbH will present the planning status to visitors. This includes an inventory analysis and the identification of potential areas for environmentally friendly heat supply.

Insights into municipal heat planning

Municipal heat planning is required by law, but does not entail any obligations for citizens. Rather, it should contribute to the development of concrete approaches to ensure a safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly heat supply in Sonneberg. Dialogue with visitors has top priority, with opportunities for participation created through cards and posters to clarify questions and collect suggestions on heat supply.

This event is part of a larger trend in Germany that is seriously addressing heat supply. According to the federal government, heat supply accounts for over 50% of final energy consumption and contributes significantly to CO2 emissions. Currently around 80% of heat demand is met by imported fossil fuels such as gas and oil, highlighting the need for changes like this bmwsb.bund.de clearly presented.

Heat supply of the future

Future heat supply should increasingly rely on renewable energies and unavoidable waste heat. The Heat Planning Act passed in November 2023 creates the legal basis for nationwide measures in Germany and defines clear deadlines for the creation of heat plans. Municipalities with more than 100,000 inhabitants must implement their heat planning by June 30, 2026 and smaller municipalities by June 30, 2028.

An important step into the future are the requirements for the use of renewable energies in new and existing heating networks. From March 2025, new heating networks must generate at least 65% of net heat production from renewable energies or waste heat, while by 2030 existing heating networks should be powered by 30% from these sources. The goal is to create completely fossil-free heating networks by 2045.

With its citizens' information evening, the city of Sonneberg shows that it seeks dialogue with its citizens and actively pursues sustainable solutions. Especially in times of rising heating costs due to increases in gas and oil prices, it is even more important to work together on a cost-efficient and climate-friendly heat supply.
