New cell phone mast in Probstzella: Faster network for everyone!
Preparations for a new cell phone site in Probstzella are in full swing. Construction work on a steel lattice mast, which will be around 31 meters high, has been underway since mid-September 2025. The location is strategically located between Arnsbach and Schaderthal, very close to the B85. The aim of these measures is to significantly improve mobile phone coverage in the region, especially along the B85 and between surrounding towns, such as in southern Thuringia reported.
The need for such an expansion is clear from the fact that data usage in mobile communications is increasing by around 30 percent annually. To meet this challenge, Telekom is commissioning Deutsche Funkturm to build the mast, which will not only be available to Telekom, but also to other mobile phone providers. Construction work on the foundation began at the beginning of September 2025, and the handover of the mast to Telekom is planned for December 2025.
The big step towards 5G coverage
The mast is scheduled to go into operation in the first half of 2026 and will cover mobile communications coverage with 2G, 4G and 5G. But it's not just Probstzella that is undergoing significant expansion. In the first quarter of 2025, network operators across Germany made significant progress in 5G expansion. Deutsche Telekom has improved mobile phone coverage at 863 locations, including 99 new locations with 4G and 5G antennas, such as 5G provider reported.
Particularly noteworthy are the 14 new locations in Hesse, the largest number in this period, followed by North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria, where 13 new locations were each established. Telekom now reaches 98 percent of households in Germany with 5G. O2 Telefónica also needed over 1,600 expansion measures, of which around 100 new locations were put into operation and 500 new 5G transmitters were installed.
No plans from Vodafone or Telefónica
It should also be noted that there are currently no usage plans from Vodafone or Telefónica for the Probstzella location. While these providers continue to focus on expanding in underserved areas, including some major cities such as Cologne, it remains to be seen whether this will change in the future.
Overall, it can be said that mobile communications expansion plays a crucial role in keeping up with growing data usage and, above all, in improving the quality of life of people in rural regions. The developments in Probstzella are a further step in this direction.
