Stolberg declaration: Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia are pitching in!

On October 28, 2025, an important cabinet meeting took place in Stolberg, at which the state governments of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia met. Under the leadership of the Prime Minister Dr. Reiner Haseloff and Mario Voigt pursued the common goal of strengthening the economic future of both countries and intensifying cooperation. The meeting ended with the adoption of the “Stolberg Declaration”, which promotes various economic policy initiatives and strategies. Thueringen.de reports that the Prime Ministers reaffirmed the will to establish reliable and cooperative relationships in order to advance the Central Germany region.

A central concern of the meeting was the development of a common flood protection concept for the helmets, which is estimated to cost around 200,000 euros and is expected to take four years. The collaboration between the “Karstlandschaft Südharz” biosphere reserve and the “Kyffhäuser” nature park was also discussed.

Promoting historic sites

The continuation of the special investment program (SIP II) was also on the agenda. The aim is to comprehensively renovate and develop palaces, fortresses and gardens in the region. Prime Minister Haseloff emphasized the need to utilize the potential of both countries, while Voigt underlined the relevance of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia as a strong voice of the East.

In addition to these issues, the state governments called on the federal government, among other things, to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and modernize procurement law. Particular attention will be paid to the planned relief in energy prices from January 1, 2026, although there is still a need for action to reduce the system costs of the energy transition.

Cooperation in viticulture

Another point on the diverse agenda was the planned deepening of cooperation in the Saale-Unstrut wine-growing region in order to strengthen the regional wine industry. In this context, concerns were also raised about the EU Commission's proposals for the Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-2034, with calls for changes.

Also mentioned is the collaboration on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the German Peasants' War, which was rated as successful. These fields of action make it clear that major projects are underway in Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia that are intended not only to strengthen the structural space, but also to create added value for the entire Central Germany region. Together, the two countries look to the future with optimism and show that they have a good knack for cooperation and strategic planning.
